Through which mechanism does insulin affect food intake?

a. It enables the intestines to digest certain types of protein that they would not otherwise be able to digest.
b. It increases the percentage of each meal that is stored as fats.
c. It increases the sensitivity of the taste buds to sugars.
d. It increases the preference for salty foods.

I chose answer B. because if you eat too much, your body converts excess blood glucose into fats and other stored fuels. The flow of glucose from the blood into cells depends on insulin, a hormone released by the pancreas. Insulin helps to move excess nutrients out of the blood and into the liver or fat cells.
- I am not sure if the answer is A. or B. because A seems possible also. I really need help on this one! It was confusing.

My two daughters came up with their sugar and cholesterol levels slightly high. Their weight is o.k. and everything else. They are 11 and 9 years old. The pediatrician told me to put them on a diet, but didn't give me any ideas. They've always been picky eaters since they were a year old, specially the youngest one. My older daughter has been modifying her eating habits very well. The younger one is my biggest problem when it comes to nutrition. I'm worried that there are not many options out there. Everything is so "sugary". I wanted to get recommendations, specially for breakfast, of beverages that I can give them to substitute the sugary juices and refreshments. They are good drinkers of water, though, but I don't want them to get bored. I've also read about the dangers of artificial sweeteners, and Stevia is so expensive. Please be considerate and don't make jokes about this. It is serious for me. I'm trying to reach those parents that understand.

He asked the doctor but he didn't give him an answer. He is very depressed, feels horrible, every time he eats he gets sick to his stomach. His sugar was about 550 when he last went to the doctor & he was given a prescription but it doesn't bring it down any lower than 300. Does it take a while to get in your system? He has no insurance & can't afford to go to the nutrition classes. Is there some help out there for him.

On my father's side of the family almost EVERYONE has diabetes (both type A and B, plus they are all overweight Itaians lol), and on my mothers side they are all underweight super tall french people with high cholestorol and blood pressure.
I know I am young but a few months ago I went on a diet, because I would have 2 whole pieces of white bread and 1/4 loaf of franchese bread each night (not including the BUTTER), I havn't had barely any bread since.

Am i still at risk for diabetes even though I rarely have bread and butter anymore? I also have a lower body fat% now.

My blood sugar was 39 and my temperature was 102 when I passed out driving my car on the highway. I end up going to the hospital and not waking up for 5 hours. I was in the hospital 3 times during a 24 hour period. The first time was when I passed out outside in the heat while I was drinking and I took me medication at 9:30 P.M. that night and I didn’t wake up for 3 or 4 hours in the hospital. The second time was when I broke my arm and they gave me two shots in my butt so I could get x-rays for my hand. The third time in 24 hours was when I was driving my car on the highway and I passed out and my dad was following me. I donated some blood at my community blood center a couple months ago and its time for me to donate again which I want to but I don’t want to pass out. The doctor drew my blood and I won’t know the results until next week sometime.

Here's the poop.
For years now, I have been having severe reactions to eating....especially big meals...and especially after I've gone a while without eating.
What happens: I eat a nice meal. 30 minutes later, my heart begins pounding out of my chest...sometimes irregularly. I dont know much, but I know unless you've been really physically active, you shouldnt feel your heart beating like this. Also, My body gets a little tingly and I begin to get drowsy...more like malase. My breathing becomes a little labored too. Soon, I fall asleep, but only for 15-20 minutes. It is a DEEP sleep!
When I wake up my whole body is kinda numb, kinda "buzzy" and I feel like I have been drugged. It takes me forever to get out the post-nap funk. I can tell you that NO prescribed pain killers or pain meds have EVER made me feel the same kind of ssedation.

Also, if I am in a situation where I cant go to sleep (in the store or restaurant), I get dizzy and anxious and fidgety
Any thoughts?

I purchased my onetouch ultra mini (green) today.
I got it home, opened the box and went through everything.
I'm trying to figure out HOW to store EVERYTHING in the pouch without it ripping and being able to zip it up.

It seems like its a REALLY tight fit!!

the meter itself has a plastic holder it sits in. but where does the lancing pen and strip container go? it seems when I put them each in the other 2 straps and have lancets in the zipper and the book in the back (even tried with the book inside the pouch) it is too tight of a fit.

Does anyone have pics they can email me of how its all supposed to fit in there??

If so, click the button on my yahoo answers profile and send me a message, I'll reply with my emial addy for you to send pics with.

Thank you for any help you can offer!!

My husband is soon to have open heart surgery for 3 blocked coronary vessels and while I know that others have this and survive , I worry for him and find myself crying thinking I might lose him. We've been together for 33 years and have 3 children. I want to be positive that he will be ok, but he is a diabetic(poorly controlled on insulin) he is 55, and has high BP (controled with medication), and has 26% kidney function. Seeing him scared knowing he does'nt have a choice except to get the surg. is tearing me up.I want to be able to ease his fears, but don't know what to say. He thinks he will die or come out of the surg. on a dialysis machine. How do I prepare my kids 12, 13, and 20 ,we are all just scared and no one to talk to that has been through this. I try not to think of myself, and I need to be strong for him but this is really the worst thing we've ever faced. He never had any idea his heart was bad, the Dr.s found this out while he was in hosp. to get his foot ulcer rep.

My husband is diabetic, and we have been trying to have a child for the last few months, and I was wondering is there anything that I can give him to help with conception? I know that when his sugar is too high he can not have sex, and when its too low we can not have sex, and then he gets upset and frustated because he feels that he cannot perform sexually as a man. I want to help and make him feel like that it is not a factor with us trying to get pregnant. Does being diabetic as a man play a role in his sperm count? And does it effect me as his wife?

I have gestational diabetes. My doctor called in a prescription to my pharmacy (Rite Aid) on Friday evening. The guy working there told me that Tricare wouldn't cover any of the cost and Medicare (Part B) wouldn't pay for it because my doctor didn't give a "diagnostic code". I asked how much it would cost without insurance. The guy said that he would call my doctor on Monday and see about either changing my prescription to something Tricare would cover or giving the diagnostic code so Medicare would cover it. I went back Saturday and today, and got the same answer.
I'm supposed to have the testing supplies by Monday, to take to my doctor/diabetes educator/nutritionist appointment in the afternoon.
I'm hoping that everything works out with my insurance so I won't have to pay, but if not, I'll have to pay out of pocket (if I can afford it).

About how much does diabetes testing supplies (meter thing, strips, needles, whatever else I'll need) cost? (I won't need insulin.)

I am 23 years old and have had numbness in my feet and calves with slight pain in my calves from time to time. This has been constant pain with no period of absense for 2 months now. I went to a neurologist and he just pricked my feet with a needle and then chocked it up to neuropathy caused by pre-diabetes. Is this possible? I thought it took a long time for people to develope neuropathy complications from diabetes. He prescribed me Topamax, and it hasn't help. Not to mention I don't like that medication.

What else could be going on? I am fairly healthy (although overweight from PCOS), and active physically on my feet. I feel like the doctor blew me off and that his diagnosis was not thorough. The numbess/pins & needles feeling is constant 24 hrs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I have a relative from two previous generations that had the disease, but I'm rather fit and stuff and it hasn't shown up before. Though my eating habits can be better, what should I do to ensure that I won't get the disease?

Over the last seven hours, I've had to use the restroom 7 times in order to urinate. Granted the fact that I drank five-six cans of juice, and three 16-oz. bottles of water, I'm still kinds nervous, considering I remember hearing about how constant urination can be possible symptoms of prostate cancer or diabetes. btw, I'm 15. Thanks in advance.
