Vegetarian & Vegan - February 2007

I have met several vegetarians who were very unhealthy (ie. they ate mostly veggie pizza, burgers, fries, etc and avoided salads and tofu)....

As a vegetarian do you think you live a healthier lifestyle than the general population? Here are some things to consider:

a) Are you a smoker/non-smoker?
b) Do you eat mostly organic/sometimes/ rarely?
c) Do you exercise often/sometimes/rarely?

I bought a bag of linseeds and I realized I don't know many recipes with this ingredient, usually I eat them raw over salad, or stews. Can anyone give me some healthy recipes with linseeds? (vegetarian recipes, if possible)

I'm interested in learning more about the macrobiotic diet and the principles behind it and proper food combining. I need a resource (book or website) that could help me understand it, something that details the plan that is easy to understand. If you could recommend something, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks :)

I have only been a vegetarian for a short while and so most of my cooking experience involves meat orietned food. Beyond that I haven't been the best cook.

Anyway I am looking for magazines, cookbooks, webiste etc. that provide simple recipes for various types of food, wether it be Thai or Greek or quick lunch to giant dinner.

Thank you so much.

i am 28 years old and i am considering going vegetarian , or following a raw food diet for the health benefits mostly. however it does kind of concern me that i will not get enough of what my body needs. can someone reassure me that it is possible and maybe someone could give me a typical daily menu for a vegetarian. much appreciated in advance!!

I am a new vegetarian, and I hope to soon make the transition to becoming a vegan....my question is how can I successfully make that transition? ...it seems like almost everything is made from animal by-products....are there any good meat substitutes (like boca burgers) that are completely vegan? What can you recommend to replace dairy and other animal products?

Thanks :)

I'm a new vegetarian and I've started reading the book 'Fit for Life' which advocates the macrobiotic diet. I have a question about food combining--the concept is confusing to me. Supposedly, you are to eat only one concentrated (non-fruit or vegetable) item at each meal because eating two or more is too much of a stress on your digestive system. But my question is, would a black-bean or veggie burger count as more than one concentrated item, since it is made up of egg whites, soy protein and other things? And would you be able to have milk and cereal? I am clueless and I want to be sure that I am following the guidelines of proper food combining!

Thanks :)

No animal products of any kind. No animal product derivatives (eggs, dairy). No highly processed foods, no flour, no HFCS.
None of that fake-oh crap where they shape soy to look like chicken nuggets.

Basically you just eat fresh fruit and veggies (does not have to be local or organic) which can be cooked or not. Then you add in a little bit of things like beans, sprouted no-flour bread, and artisan products like dried fruit, coffee, dehydrated cuke chips, non-dairy cocoa. I imagine it as bascially a kind of pre-industrial vegetarian?

But I don't know what to call it so I am having A REALLY HARD TIME finding anybody else doing this! What do you call this style of eating? HELP! :-) Hunter, vegan, organic, all wrong.

I have been a vegetarian for a little over a year. I feel better than ever and truly believe that a low fat vegetarian diet is the optimal way to eat for maximal health.

However, over the last couple of months, I have noticed, shall I say, "Snap, Crackle, Pop". That's the best way to describe what I hear daily from my neck, shoulders, wrists, knees, etc. It is not painful, and I have not a clue what is causing it. I am otherwise in great health, but this frequent popping and cracking I seem to be hearing and feeling seems out of the ordinary. I have a theory, and I think it is related to a staple of many vegetarian diets. Please share your thoughts. Perhaps someone else has had a similar experience. Thanks so much for your help!

sometimes people in my life go, "wow that is so great you are a vegatarian". but i tell them, i can not take credit for this because there is something beyond my thought which causes me not to eat meat. do you think its possible for this mode of living to go beyond compassion and human thought and be a mode of living, whether an evolution or just a byproduct of that persons biology? because it seems to me i was built this way and it is not a conscious effort at all. to take credit absolute for it would be a moral sin in a way? does anyone else feel this way about their vegetarianism? please serious replies only. thank you.

Boca, Turtle Island, Lightlife, Yves, El Burrito and others all make great vegetarian sausages and hot dogs. Most of these seem to be cased with something, and are edible.

I've done countless searches on the internet and have only come up with this: edible cellulose casings, starch based casings, and an alginous coating, ala vegicase.

But what I can't find is where can I get some of these casings? I make veggie sausage at home and use plastic casings. You can't eat those, and you certainly can't grill them.
