Yes. I've been to several Ethiopian restaurants
that serve quite a bit of veg food. In N.C. where
I live I've met several vegetarians from Cameroon,
Kenya, and Ethiopia. Much of this due to a scarcity
of livestock to kill in their regions.

Ironically many Africans relocate to America and
start to gain weight and incur health problems due
to an increase of meat in their diet. I know this
because African expatriates told me so.
All of this information given to me makes perfect
since. I can't help but notice that every time they
have a big concert to raise money to feed Africans
they buy grains, beans, lentils, etc. instead of meat.
These foodstuffs are cheaper, go further, have a
far greater shelf life and never contain the parasites
that animal products do.

It's an interesting question, and I feel bad for a shoddy "idk but i think so yah" answer, but -- I think so. I have an East African cookbook -- not something designed for the Western market, but a weird import, signed by its Tanzanian author, and it's got a surprising amount of "If vegetarian, you may substitute..." in the directions.

And an awful lot of meat recipes, too, but it's clearly not a very obscure practice.

"Africa" = big area with lots of countries, too. I imagine it varies a fair bit, and I wonder if it's not more prevalent in East Africa given proximity to India?

Vegetarians come in all shapes, sizes, races, religions, creeds, sex, backgrounds, futures.
