Include any recipes or cooking ideas, and you can include your favourite veggie dishes too.

I am a vegetarian and am trying to convert to a vegan.. What are the possible short and long term side effects of soy milk? I heard that there are certain components in soy milk which boost estrogen production in your body, is that true ? And will this result in early onset of menstrual cycle in young girls ?

I'm 15 and I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for about a year. I'm looking for a good supplement for extra safety. I've taken GNC Ultra Mega Multivitamin, but it doesn't seem to do any good. I've been thinking of switching to a produce called Vitamin World Rose Hips Vegetarian Capsules, as the explanation of their product seemed to catch my eye a little more than the GNC product did. Do you think the vitamin from Vitamin World work better than the multivitamin from GNC?

This is the Vitamin World site link: http://www.vitaminworld.com/pages/file.asp?xs=AEE319D49C77450793CC259F66B92779&PID=1665&np=0

And the GNC site link: http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2133432&cp=2522443.2108481&parentPage=family

I have several "tubes" of polenta from Trader Joe's, and I can't really figure out a good simple recipe for them, besides just frying them up and eating with tofu/tempeh.
Any favorites?

One of the approval criteria for the veggie society seedling symbol is that products must be GMO free.

Are they confusing moral arguements here ?

While non-GMO may be a worthwhile choice, whats it got to do with vegetarianism.

Please don't quote how good non-GMO is for us or the planet.

Thats not the question, the question is whats it got to do with vegetarianism

The impact of thier stance is that many products are truely veggie, but cannot be approved by the veggie soc.

It also has a knock-on effect that our veggie B&B cannot be veggie soc approved beause we use branston baked beans, which are veggie but may contain beans from the USA which cannot be guranteed to be non-GMO. The perception then is that somehow we're not really veggie, which is just not true

Just curious

Ever since I was little, I never really felt comfortable eating meat, but my whole family are meat eaters, so I am too. When I was eleven, I decided to become a vegetarian, but after a week my mom was worried I wasn't getting enough protein, so she made me start eating meat.
I'm now 17, and I just watched some PETA videos about cruelty to chickens and pigs and so on, and I had my last straw with it! I can no longer be a part of something like that.
The thing is, i don't want to get into the whole tofu thing either, because i'll be the only person in my family who is a vegetarian. So, any ideas on how I can keep a balanced diet without meat? If someone could give me a smart daily meal plan that'd be great.
For right now, I still eat things containing eggs, and milk... but who knows, that might change soon too.

For those with limited means, a hardy grilled cheese sandwich can be ironed to perfection. Yummy. What setting do you use to make it scruptuous to your liking? A bit starchy at times but hey it works.

(Don't forget to pull the plug after use)

Symptoms of gout include enlarged and stiff joints in the body, frequently found in ankles of older folks and long term (ten years or more) vegans who eat mostly beans, caused by high Uric acid build up. Doctor’s advice is to stay clear of beans.

If this a myth or another medical symptom,
- how does a body get gout process beans that are often the related cause of high uric acid ?
- Is there a method of cooking beans like lentils and dhal to reduce likelihood of uric acid build up ?
- what does one eat to make up for iron deficiency ?
