when you are a vegetarian, your body will downregulate the production of enzymes to digest meat.
When you switch your diet by eating meat, your body will produce the enzymes in normal amount as response to your meal. As long as you are healthy, your body will cope with the changes efficiently and very well.

One of the sillier types of flak I've heard of.

My three siblings and I were all raised vegetarian, and while I still don't care to try it, they all have. Nary a problem reported -- but then, they didn't just wake up one morning and have steak for breakfast and squid for lunch, etc. If he changes his mind (a 1-in-4 chance he will not, by this insanely tiny sampling), it'll almost certainly start with just a few nibbles here and there, which shouldn't lead to any problems.

I can't imagine that you are ruining his choice - I have two friends who were raised strict vegetarian from birth but both started eating meat at age 20... no problems at all. I've heard that you may feel a little ill after the first meat meal but then it's ok. Don't worry about it!

He'll still be able to digest it, although he'd probably have to take baby steps to avoid getting sick. If you are raising him veg, just be sure to give a multi vitamin or protein supplement because kids really do need the extra vitamins and protein, it doesn't matter if it comes from meat or not as long as he gets it.

It's a popular misconception that humans are omnivores. Our teeth and colon are that of herbivores.

That's why you see so many people with huge bellies that stick out. Undigested meat rotting in their colons. Which leads to colon and prostate cancers.

He will always have a choice. Let's hope he picks the more healthy options.

I have heard of vegetarians getting the 'runs' or feeling a bit sick...

If he wants to try it, let him. If he's happy being veg, who cares!

it would make you really sick at first, but you would slowly be able too. my friend was a veggie for almost 10 years then decided to eat meat. it made her soooo sick, but she didnt give up and within a few months she was fine.

Humans are born omnivores, you never loose the ability to digest meat. You might get the runs when you eat it the first time, as your body isn't used to it, but that will pass with time. Start with white meat like pork or chicken, then work your way up to red meat. Be careful, once you get a taste for it, you'll never go back. Yum
