He is a functional alcoholic (attorney), but both he and I know that his problem has gotten out of control. We laugh about it 80% of the time, and talk seriously about it 20% of the time.
When we talk seriously, I tell him that his problem is ruining his life, finances, work, and relationships (with family and women). He agrees.
I suggest counseling (and/or anything that will change his behavior), but he doesn't see how it will help. (He's super-smart and conceded, yet can be very insecure at times.)
What is my role/responsibility as his very good friend?
