A few streets over a man in a BMW with a nice suit on pretended to be looking for houses to list. He then attacked my neighbor. I believe she may have been raped. We live in a very nice area!

I'm outside ALL the time during the day with my kids playing in the cul-de-sac. Usually all my neighbors are gone. Now I'm freaked out.

Do you all play outisde with your kids? Am I to stay indoors all the time? Is no where safe anymore?

I can't believe people would think I would let my kids out alone. Who does that? I'm outside for hours on end with them outside. We can't fence in our yard because we face community property. The cul-de-sac is a great place for us! It has a lot of community proprty where we can play.

Just felt like my sense of security was ruined.

I play outside with my kids all the time. I'm sorry that happened to your neighbor...and I hope they catch the b@stard, and forcibly remove his penis.

Violent crime can potentially happen anywhere. However, you need to remember the benefits of playing outside with your kids. Just be safe-- the old adage, never talk to strangers, still applies. Maybe take a self- defense course for added safety... I know it's crazy to have that happen in your "nice area"... but the kids need to be able to play in the yard as well. Do you have a backyard where they can play? Is there a safe park? Can you get them involved in club soccer or baseball?
Also, speak to the other parents in the street and talk about what happened-- they may be feeling the same way and there will be comfort (and safety) in numbers.
The last thing... check the sex offender registry and if there is a registered sex offender in your neighborhood, organize the parents and protest his or her living in a neighborhood with young children.
Just be aware--- one incident does not mean that your neighborhood is unsafe-- and the odds of a violent crime happening to you is very low. Keep your eyes on the kids.

Get a guard dog.Never let the kids out alone. Keep a cell phone on you so you can call 911 just in case. You should go down to the police station and talk to the captain in charge and tell him you need a patrol set up for you block,

OMG - that is SCARY! I can't blame you tho. It is everywhere that you must be careful. My kids are older now, but I still worry. I don't have my daughter walk places by herself - always worrying what could happen. When I was a teen, I walked everywhere - alone. Now, you hear of so many scary things. I wouldn't want to go out with my kids either. It doesn't just happen in "bad" neighborhoods anymore....
