Assuming there are only 5 million homes that heat with oil in the northeast, and we all saved one or two gallons per night because we didn't have to heat our homes because of the warm weather, that should produce a surplus of 25 to 50 million gallons of heating oil. In addition to not burning that approximately 25 to 50 million gallons of heating oil, what kind of affect do you think this has had on the manmade aspects of "global warming"?
Now multiply that by the many more millions of homes that have not had to use heating oil thus far this year. How do you think that affects the manmade aspects "global warming"?

On a chemical level, how does a solar panel work? What are the chemicals inside it that react with one another, and how are the chemicals arranged and assembled with the other materials?

Specifically, I'm trying to determine if I could build a solar cell at home, even if it is very inefficient. Any information is appreciated.

All this talk about Global Warming. We could have avoided the whole issue if we were smart enough to begin with. Just simply living in harmony with nature. ie: Not polluting the air, the water, cutting down the rainforests, over fishing the oceans, wasting the natural resources provided for us. Using renewable resources, etc.

And we are supposed to be the "Superior beings" on the planet. Meaning we really should know better, and we do know better, we've been talking about it for years, when you really think about it. Just look back to the 70's, and the Love Canal superfund site, Erin Brockovitch, etc...

I know we have the technology, but corporation's block it, because of sickening greed. Why don't we have enough freaking morality, to stand up to these bastards?

Still, we choose to continue pillaging, and plundering, and slowly making the earth less and less habitable, not even considering future generations.

Why can't we just all work together and do something?

I prefer the term Climate change, because it dosen't imply that the whole world is heating up, as with 'global warming'. Climate change refers to the climate changing in general, because not everything in particular is going to warm is it?

If compact low-energy bulbs use a higher current to start them, I wonder if switching on and off when leaving and re-entering a room uses more energy than leaving them on the whole time. They also take a while to come up to full brightness each time they are switched on.

Why should we take this global warming theory any more seriously? Next time the earth begins a cooling cycle, the scientists will probably create another panic due to the next inevitable ice age.

Why is it that there are still some people out there who do not believe Global Warming is real despite the fact the international scientific community (I think the IPCC?) has came out and said they are 95% certain it is due to humans? How can people say the scientific community just wants to profit off this? How would a scientist profit off this when they are payed by organizations for their research and their reputation (which is vital to scientist) relies on it? Is it just a moral issue? Do people simply not care? If so how can they not care? Socrates said "one can not know and then not do the morally right thing." So is it simply a lack of knowing which keeps us from doing the right thing?

In other words, explain to me how it is possible humanity ignores which we know is most likely true (according to the scientific community-im trying to be unbiased here)?

"September sea ice was 39 percent below the long-term average from 1979 to 2000. Sea ice cover is in a downward spiral and may have passed the point of no return, with a possible ice-free Arctic Ocean by summer 2030, senior scientist Mark Serreze said."

How does woodland management differ from deforestation?
What are the benefits/disadvantages of well managed woodland?
Can we take a yield of timber without damaging the eco system or clearing the whole of the woods?
Is there a connection between health of a woods and varying 'ages' of trees from sapling to fully mature tree?

Coppppied from an online news source tonight : -

'The radioactive fallout from a nuclear accident that rocked Britain 50 years ago was underestimated, scientists say.

In 1957, a fire at the Windscale nuclear reactor in Cumbria led to a release of radioactive material that spread across the UK and Europe.

But new research claims the incident generated twice as much radioactive material and caused dozens more cancers than was previously thought.'
It scares the hell out of this old lady what do you think about it (Windscale/Sellarfield)

I have been doing some research on the topic and I found out that it's been 750 000 years since the last switch and that it usually switches about every 500 000 years...so we are about due. Also, that it takes around 7000 years for the entire process to happen and during this time the magnetic fields(especially at the poles), is weaker and doesn't protect us as much from the sun and specifically from solar flares.

So is it possible that global warming may not be caused by man-made greenhouse gasses and it is just a natural cycle in the history of our planet every time the poles switch?

Lots of new couples are buying homes in my neighborhood. Suddenly, the whole block has a cloud of thick, gray, harsh smelling smoke. I guess it's romantic or a novelty for them.
So is it bad for the environment? I certainly feel like the air is polluted now. Is the amount of smoke going into the environment for 1 or 2 people to keep warm worth it? Especially when we no longer have to heat our homes that way?
