We are being encouraged to use energy saver bulbs in every room but in areas where lights are flicked on for a very short time - eg broom cupboard, utility rooms or toilets, it would seem wasteful to use energy savers as they do not give good light in the short time they are on AND they burn more electricty when first switched on. Is this true?

Seems to me that if we can engineer better crops we should also be able to engineer trees or plants to absorb more greenhouse gasses.

For example, what's it made of, how deep is it typically, and where would you expect to find it?

Singapore, being an island-state, has one of the world most densely populated population. We have increased by 0.6m - from 3.9m in 2000 to 4.5m in 2007. Government is expecting population to grow to 6.5m in the foreseeable future. Should the day come, we may experience an energy crunch both in resources as well as food. Are there plans in place to implement renewable alternative energy resources, such as - solar, wind, hydro or wavegen energy source alternatives? How are existing population to cope with the inconveniences, if government were to intensify these areas of R&D in tropical green technologies implementation. Who is responsible to educate the masses on these and make the transition, adjustment smooth and uninterrupted? Coordinating and orchestrating takes a great amount of communications and persuasion. The recent revelation has caused much discomfort and as a citizen, we should ponder deep and serious on how to live amicably in the substainable city in the near future to come.
