I am working at a MRDD workshop and there is a man there who is probably in his older 40's. I have been meeting with him once a week to help him learn how to read. He was pulled out of school when he was really young and is illiterate as a result. Other than his illiteracy, he appears to be a typically functioning adult. His desire is to learn how to read and I really want to help him with it, but I don't have the resources. (Money, books, or workbooks) Does anyone know of any websites that offer free worksheets, etc.? I am a senior college student who is an Education major, so I know how to teach him, I'm just hurting from a lack of resources. So anything that anyone knows of will be a lot of help. Thank you and God bless!

Would you use a phonics program? Or would you use a variety of educational materials? Just curious to see how someone would help a child learn to read that was having difficulties. Thanks :)

I am a South African teacher (40 yrs old) living and working in the UK for 8 months now. How frustrating to see that British teachers are told exactly how to present their lessons. What is the point of 4 years training? Surely one's creativity is being stifled and we teachers are but mere 'puppets on a string', not to mention all the disciplining issues one has on a daily basis. I am now considering leaving the profession. Are there teachers out there who feel the same way I do? Is there anyone who has left teaching to do something else successfully? Or is putting up with all of the above worth it for our lovley, long holidays? I desperately need some wise counsel from my fellow colleagues.

I'm a teacher and it has been a tough year for me. I've had a lot of challenges. So, I'm just curious what people think a good teacher should be like! This is my 11 year teaching, so it gets pretty hectic. Also, I think that kids are somewhat different than they were 10 years ago. I can not put my finger on it, or mayble it is just me...

I've been teaching for almost 3 months as an English Teacher. I've been observed as a teacher at the school I'm working for but I failed my first observation. So I got observed again in which I passed. However, my school has decided to drop my full-time position to part-time. Which means my hours are cut short and therefore I won't beable to earn enough money to make a living. Should I stay at this school?

I have been offered another job with another school but its really far...should I just take this offer or stick it out with my school and work really hard next semester to get my full-time status back?

I like teaching and I'm learning new things everyday with my students and teaching styles that works and doesn't work.

A few weeks ago, our chemistry teacher left to go to a friends wedding that she had requested a few days off for quite a few months before. The school denied her and said that if she left, she couldn't come back. She was going to quit at the end of the year anyway, so she decided to quit then and there. Now, we have this pharmacist as our new chemistry teacher, but he grades like he's insane. This quarter counts as 30% of our grade of the entire year. We've had 3 quizes, and no real homework assignments. The homework that he does assign is "extra credit" that adds 5 points to each quiz. The problem is that each question on each quiz is worth at least 5 points, and he's only assigned maybe four assignments, so they only make up for four wrong answers. My grade was a 98% in the class before he came, but because of this retard's quizes, my grade has plumetted to a 54%. If it stays like this, I'll fail, and colleges will probably not accept me. How can I complain and get a good grade?

I read in the paper something about teachers being banned from expressing party political views in school. I was wondering why this was, and also, would my teachers be breaking this rule in the following scenarios.

My chemistry teacher told us that he doesn't vote for the 3 main parties because they're all the same. My history teacher regularly expresses his negative views on Tony Blair, how the Labour party are drifting away from their socialist beliefs and his dislike for the Tory's.

Would this be breaking the rule, or does the teacher have to be expressing extreme views in order to be breaking the law?

Teacher is female

so we had this weird semester test schedule. and our lunch was off campus. so me and my friends went out to eat. well i was like a minute late to my next class and i hurried as fast as i could. i probably should say that semester tests are REALLY important. well the other day my teacher said that she will be locked the doors if anyone is late they wouldnt be able to take the test. well fine she DID warn us. but i wasnt planin on. so i got locked out and now i have to make it up. well our school POLICY says that if a student is not in class for more than 5 minutes that student is absent. if a student is late but less than 5 minutes than that student is just tardy. so do u think it was right of her to lock the door? cuz i was only a minute late.

thanks

My "assistant" has been reassigned to me even though I was promised a new one. She does whatever she wants, is late every day, is never where she is supposed to be, and does not complete her delegated responsiblilties.(She hasn't even taken attendance since November.) I teach Spec. Ed to children ages 6-9, and I teach two grades simultaneously. The "higher-ups" are well aware of the problems. (I started in Feb.06 and I am told the problem is well known and has been for some time.) I will not make progress with my students in the coming year, and could lose my cert. if I am held responsible in any way for her actions( or inadequacy). ( Everyone knows administration steps aside and the teacher goes down if the school is sued because she is not doing her job.) She makes fantastic money and has 18yrs experience . ( I have 10). It is not personal. I only made progress this year because I have 2 one to ones in my room helping me. She is definitely a liability. What to do?I have no tenure!

Not preached, solicited, or put down, Students would learm ABOUT world religion in a single class. Of course, not all religions could be taught, but the most adhered to belief systems would be taught. I believe that the lack of teachers and money could be overcome, since I also believe that a class like this is becoming very important to our society. Also, I think it should be a choice class for high school students, since younger pupils may have more unstable beliefs.
