How are teachers paid????

I want to be an elementary teacher when I get older. The district that I want to work at pays the teachers annually. If teachers don't work in the summer, are they still paid?? How does it work if teachers are paid annually??

It depends on how the district you work in divides their pay. Paid annually simply means the amount a teacher earns per year. This does not mean they get paid once a year. Most teachers get paid their annual salary in monthly installments. (divide the pay bracket by 12) Some districts decide to take your 12 checks and "hurry them up" - LAUSD used to pay 12 checks in 11 months. This would allow a 13th check if you worked summer school.

Does it all sound confusing? well it usually is, every district is different. best to talk to a teacher in the district you intend to work in as an adult.

I am paid for 10 months of the year--which is the amount of time the school is open. What my district does is spread that 10 month salary out over 12 months. They take so much out of each of my 10 monthly paychecks so that I get 2 summer paychecks. I don't make extra money--it's just spread out. Some school districts only pay you 10 checks and you have to be very vigilant to make sure you have enough to make it through the summer. Either way, you are counting pennies until you get another paycheck in the fall.

In Texas, teachers sign a contract for a set number of months. I am a classroom teacher, not a coach or fine arts director so my contract length is 10 months. My salary is based on 10 months of work. I am
given the option to have my check split into 10 monthly checks or 12 monthly checks. I chose the 12 months so that I would continue to receive a monthly paycheck even during the summer.

The teachers are paid here monthly, and yes they get paid in the summer if they teach. Other than that they are screwed!
