I'm a teacher and it has been a tough year for me. I've had a lot of challenges. So, I'm just curious what people think a good teacher should be like! This is my 11 year teaching, so it gets pretty hectic. Also, I think that kids are somewhat different than they were 10 years ago. I can not put my finger on it, or mayble it is just me...

I say it isn't you!!!

I was in public education for 22 years. I found so many teachers having to do too much other stuff for kids.

I feel there are way too many pressures on the whole educational system for kids to rise to the top. All kids can't. Each class has it's own personality. Some much easier to teach, some on the first day of school you started counting the days!!! LOL

Try talking to other teachers both younger and older. Just talking may help get you back doing what it appears you do well. TEACH KIDS!!!

My favorites:
High School Counselor
Current Events Teacher who was also the Wrestling Coach. I learned so much from him about life.
Both are retired but still great people!!!

E-Mail if you wish.

I agree, I am teaching now and remember those teachers who really inspired me. Who told us life stories, who tried to make learning fun and enjoyable and who helped us out when we were overwhelmed. They were caring, helpful and I never saw their ugly side. But now I am teaching (8 years for me), and my students think they some how "own" the class and I am just some noise they could care less about....Other, more exprienced teachers tell me the same thing. That times have changed and most students are completely unfamiliar with anything "human" nowadays with the internet, video games, and their Ipods. If it doesn`t flash or entertain them, there is no point in learning it. Perhaps we need to do everything by e-mail, text messeging or power point to get their attention.

My favorite teacher so far(I'm still in school, grade 8 :>) is my literature teacher from last year. He's different in the sense that he doesn't just throw all the info we need to learn at us, he tells it to us in such a way that makes us want to learn more. He can be strict sometimes, but most of the time he's just like our friend, and it helps when he gives us gossip about other teachers or his personal experiences x)

I'm sure you're not that bad a teacher, it's not easy to teach us kids nowadays xD Just try not to focus so much on getting your students to ace in the subject, but get them to like the subject instead.
good luck!

hmm.. easy one..

My favorite teachers were Mr. Gerard who taught SciFi and paperbacks.. The classes themselves drew in people who loved to read, so we all got along... he went all out.. even dressing up like a leprechaun at times.. (long story) He knew any answer to any question you could possibly think up about Isaac Asimov or Science Fiction in general.. and because all of us read the books in a matter of days we spent much of our time playing trivia games.. (after our daily quiz on the books),

Mr. Heaton who taught Modern Fantasy and Creative Writing .. same thing, the classes themselves were part of it.. but, he was awesome.. if you could be creative you could pass without being there.. now, to be fair, being in a classroom for Creative writing is not that necessary... I don't know, he really loved his work, he really loved words, and really, really loved Tolkiens books.. lol.. (right on down to the map of middle earth painted on the classroom wall) ..

and the last would be.. Mr. Lyons, he was the first teacher I remember even talking to when I moved here.. He taught Earth Science (a team taught science class for people with learning disabilities) He helped me figure out how to convince them to let me out of the LD class seeing as how I was in the same book their honor students were using when I lived in Ohio.. It was a huge step backwards to get into Earth Sciences LD.. it didn't work until the next year, when I got him again for the normal science class.. He listened, he did not immediately discount what I said because I have a learning disability.. he worked with me.. if I was stuck, he'd try to figure out a better way to do it.. Sometimes during class, sometimes after or before.. but he always worked around it. He'd give me alternate assignments if need be.. (always as difficult if not worse than what they were doing) When I had problems with the girl who sat behind me during class (such as gum stuck in my hair, and sharpened pencils thrown at my head) he changed the room around so that I was no where near her.. but he did it without the girl finding out that he knew. It's weird, but my brother actually had him as a teacher the next year and he even went so far as to come to the house to pick him up when he started skipping.. (my mother was already at work when we went to school.. he'd take the bus, and then leave with his friends once it got there).. He really worked hard for everyone.. (all this on top of being the volleyball coach)_
