I teach Earth-Space Science, and I know I can write grants and ask the principal and/or school for help. But I want my students to read 4 specific books this year. For example, I'd like them to read October Sky and Silent Spring for certain. Where is the cheapest source to buy 30-40 books so I can rotate books amongst my classes.

Since when does the school system own my computer? Yet, they seem to take it for granted that children can use their parent's property merely because the teacher demands it. I say, kiss my modem!

I have helped in classrooms and interacted with students and done my hours for the prerequired classes for the credential program. I think being nervous and maybe overanxious may be a norm, but what is/are the main challenges for someone who will be subbing for the first time?

I taught for 9 years as an adjunct professor the same subject I teach in high school, and since I taught at several univ's. at the same time, it was more than a full time schedule, but most counties give you ZIPPO credit for that experience. Meanwhile any teacher that taught in a foreign country gets credit and can start higher up on the salary scale. I don't want to say they don't deserve it; they can be the best teachers.
I'm just saying that WE ALSO deserve credit. The business trend in the USA is to hire part-timers with no benefits, whereas in other countries you're considered full-time even if you teach less than U.S. adjuncts.

I'm white/American Indian mix, and my Indian side got hidden in the genes, so as an apparent white...
for 12 years i've noticed a pattern of discrimination, depending on who's in charge of my school at the time.
It's not overt and malicious, just obvious that when minorities take charge, they also prefer their own.

I am currently a first year teacher and I owe more in student loans than I make in a year.

Why is a profession that makes everyother profession possible so underpaid?

I am applying for a teacher training course and one of the questions is "why do you want to do this course". I presume they are looking for more than "im intrested in teaching" and "i like working with kids". I have no background in teaching to put down and have already put down my background of working with kids to demonstrate the second point. Is there any other suggestions/ on what to write?
Thanks.

TEACHERS!!! I know the school year is over, but give me hints on better classroom management. I teach sixth grade and find that at least 5 or 6 students per class misbehave on a regular basis. What strategies have you found that works to make them stop misbehaving? It is very frustrating to be in the middle of lecture and lose your train of thought because someone misbehaves and interupts you...or everyone is "on task" and someone makes a stupid little "mouth noise" to get attention and make the class laugh...or someone asks a stupid question and the answer is on the board in the same place EVERY DAY "What's todays date?"...What can I do to prevent misbehavior? What can I do to stop the stupid questions when the answer is on the board in the same place everyday? What can I do to stop the interuptions? What can I do to stop the stupid mouth noises? Any help would be appreciated for next year. Thanks.

For my college class, I'm working with kindergartners who are getting ready to enter 1st grade. Next week we'll be exploring icecream (it's their teacher's choice). I will brainstorm with my group to make a list of questions they have about icecream, but want some ideas of my own to go into it with.

So anything with melting, comparing, etc. Anything that kids this age would be interested in and have fun doing! Thanks & I really look foward to hearing ideas!

You work an average of 7 hours a day at most, for about 9 months. You get numerous holidays off, plus a month and a half in the summer. You moan about how you're under paid which is BS. I teach my kids a lot more than they learn in school. Don't tell me you stay late each day after school. I know that's BS also. Whenever I try to get a hold of a teacher after school, most of the time they had already left. Yeah, you may have to put up with the rambunctious student here and there, but you chose that profession. If you can't handle it, you shouldn't be doing it. In my opinion teachers today are lazy and are only showing up to get a paycheck. Sure, there are some that are good & take it seriously, but for the most part, you all thought it would be cool to work part time for fulltime pay and now your bored with it and our kids are suffering. My question is, why don't you stop taking up space & let someone who really wants to teach do it? This is more for H.S. teachers.

Do I go with a school that I already know is terribly managed but they give me the freedom to teach how I like and its a course I like and am good at (TESOL - teaching methodology). Its in a city that I'm familiar with but I don't really want to live there.

Or do I go with a new school that seems to have its business act together, is well organized but they insist that I wear a tie (and perhaps other constraints). I hate wearing ties when I teach. (the tie itself isn't such a big deal but its symbolic of control issues) This school is in a nicer smaller city that I think I would enjoy more overall.
