With the increasing emphasis on standardized testing, exams are a necessary tool to prepare our students. Exams should be based upon the standards appropriate for the grade and written similarly to the standardized tests required for those students. Constructed and administered properly, these exams will give students opportunities to practice test taking skills, such as the process of elimination, critical reading and time management. We are doing our students a disservice if we do not give exams.

No Exams are a waste of time. In the UK exams have become a political tool. Politicians use them to demonstrate to the electorate how they have supposedly improved education.Lots of people have never taken an exam in their life and still done very well, take Alan sugar for example!! People who tell you otherwise are wrong, plain and simple!!!!

That needs to be one form of assessment in the classroom. To assess student learning you need informal tools like discussions, experiments, interviews, portfolios, and observations. But you also need some formal assessment tools like essays, short answer, multiple choice, etc. - in order to make sure that a student has really learned the material. I know as I take graduate classes now, I am much more likely to study and commit things to memory when the professor has a closed book essay exam.

I cannot think of a better way of knowing if the child is progressing as required, although formal exams as such are not required unless it is felt that there is a need to know the relative levels of the entire countries children. Simple tests would be just as useful in my opinion.

assessments should better match the activities students use to learn and to apply the material learned.
An extreme example: If students learn about electric vehicles by converting a pickup truck, the exam should have students do something to the pickup truck, like replace a battery, not be a multiple choice test on paper.

Without exams everyone would be 'grouped' as having reached the same standard. I would like to know that any doctor operating on my heart or my brain is competent in performing his/her duties. I would also like to know that someone fitting gas or electrical appliances in my house is competent. In that respect, I would say that yes, everyone should do exams of one form or another.

I think it is important that students show what knowledge and understanding they have on the subject, but not everyone is good at putting their thoughts down on paper. So I think you should be given the choice of a written test or an oral one, where your teacher or an independent assessor in a one to one situation, asks you the questions and they then mark your reply. I think that would be fairer and you would achieve the same result.

How else would they test what we learn? Sure, it's a pain in the a$s..but it gives you an idea of where you stand and what you need to learn in order to do better on other exams.

I think they're kinda stupid if you gotta take TCAP, and the gateways, and then the final exams. I just did that in the 8th grade, I think that was retarted. Other than that, yeah.
