Do I go with a school that I already know is terribly managed but they give me the freedom to teach how I like and its a course I like and am good at (TESOL - teaching methodology). Its in a city that I'm familiar with but I don't really want to live there.

Or do I go with a new school that seems to have its business act together, is well organized but they insist that I wear a tie (and perhaps other constraints). I hate wearing ties when I teach. (the tie itself isn't such a big deal but its symbolic of control issues) This school is in a nicer smaller city that I think I would enjoy more overall.

I'm an energetic, enthusiastic teacher and I just don't understand why I have to tie something around my throat, and choke myself to the point of discomfort in order to show respect. Surely there are other more important ways to show respect to one's students - and I do think thats important by the way.

The second one sounds like a better bet - even if you have to wear a tie. Yes, it may denote control issues, but it also means the students will have to conform to standards as well. The first school doesn't sound like a winner at all - one of these days, they'll send in a new broom and the whole thing will be redone and you may not like someone tromping on your turf.

I understand your dilemma. Actually, both looks great oppurtnity for you but at the same time it has its own "pros and cons' as far as your likes and dislikes are concerned. If I were you I would certainly go for the second one coz I'd be living in a new city that I enjoy living in and also I'd slowly come over with the "tie' problem too, which is not a big deal comparatively. Whereas, in the case of the former oppurtuntiy you've got freedom at your job but how long are you gonna be bearing with the boring city.Would you be able to have a fun life in general? I guess NOT. So go for the second one. Sounds reasonably good.

Go with the new school. You want someone dependable to be stamping your paychecks. Also, should you need administrative support, it really sounds like the second school is the one to go with. So you have to wear a tie? Leave it knotted loosely, or maybe a clip on (but do they even sell those?) would work. As far as control issues go, there are other ways to express your individuality... like crazy socks or funny sneakers.

I bet you'll do great! Good luck.

I think I would choose the new school. Management is everything! Would you rather put up with wearing a tie, or having superiors that don't back you up? Weigh the pros and cons of both. And you aren't signing your life away, you could always give it a year and if you hate it, then move on. Good luck!

Go with the new school as you seem to be leaning towards the management style of that school You also sound like you would rather live in that city. Remember, you do have a life outside of school.

Go the place you want to live. You will have a life outside of your job so live where you want. Good luck whatever you choose.
