Do you want to learn the language or just by a book or CD and park it on the shelf. You are good if you can learn Japanese for 200 bucks. I don't think it will happen. Oh, perhaps you will memorize a few words but you will not know the language. Sorry. I was going to suggest you catch a boat to Japan, get off on the Island and find work within the culture where no other language is spoken or taught. I swept floors and waited tables and worked as a cook all the while going to school to learn Spanish in Mexico. I had no money. I cleaned up my Spanish in one year and the second I became thoroughly fluent at the conversational level. Cheap is OK. But? I don't think you really know what you want.

The cheapest and best way is to find a friend or person that speaks Japanese. You can't learn from software or a book, so don't waste your cash. A person will be able to help you begin with basic conversation as well as some cultural notes that are key to the language (such as when to use honorifics or informal language in Japanese). You can't beat having a language buddy. Understandably, there might be some problems finding someone you speaks Japanese. You may want to consider finding a pen pal online (there are many eager to practice English) and they will be able at least in writing to help you. When you get to this point, having a book or software will be good supplementary material.
On a seperate note, there is no better way to learn a language than to go to its mother country. It is expensive, yes, but the best time money can buy. There are several language schools in Japan that welcome people on a short duration who wanna learn a lot quickly. Plus, you will have no choice but to use it. This is what I did, and six years later, I can still speak it. Can't say that about the French I took in high school for 4 years!

Go to www.mylanguageexchange.com and you can post a profile and find someone who speaks Japanese that also wants help with English and you can help each other. I've done that with Arabic and Spanish speaking people. You can also buy language books with DVDs and CDs. Try half.com for cheap books with DVDs and Cds. Hope this helps.

One true way (if you have the time and money to invest) is to join a Japanese style karate club (ie. Akito, Jujitsu, Shito- Ryu). That'll teach you the basic words(ie. left, right, kick style, punch style, stance), but it also teaches phrases.
Another way is to watch -sub titled- Japanese Movies and Anime; follow what they say, how they say it, and what the translation is (listen Especially For different usage that have the same subtitles - shows proper mannerisms in dialect)
Used Books are cheep and contain the same information as the new books so do a search for used books/Japanese
I looked and the first lis has: gettextbooks.com
CheapestTextbooks.com
CampusBooks.com
powells.com
amazon.com
stores.ebay.com/used
(and others)
I do hope that you achieve the standard of learning you are striving for (wether a basic knowledge, or advanced), and I wish you luck!!!!!!!! =!;)

Join the military and ask them to be stationed in Japan. Not only is it the cheapest way to learn a new language, but they'll pay you to do it!! Too extreme?
