I have a question for you teachers ... My marine biology teacher thinks it is fine to give us large quantities of menial and condescending work, such as defining 112 vocab words for our new chapter ... No mis-type, its not 12, or 11, its 112, i hear people praising her because of how easy vocab is! WELL YOU KNOW WHAT?? I DONT COME TO SCHOOL TO COPY BOOKS. So i said that im going to skip questions to get it done easier, which is when a girl next to me said that it would be cheating. Well i told her that it wouldnt be cheating if the teacher only glances at it. She counters this statement and tells me im cheating the class out of work, which is when i told her that there is no point to this, we wont retain any of this information, which is true. Its a fact. So, teachers, especially those who believe giving vocab definitions to kids, tell me, how justified is this????

I have talked to the parents and nothing good came of it. I've taken it to administration and nothing substantive has been done. I'm told that since they are not designated with any special needs that it was just the luck of the draw that I got them. Do I really have one year of hell on earth? is there a law on my side? they are going to burn me out in no time.

I'm sorry to ask another question on this topic, but it's something that's really depressing, upsetting and disturbing me. So helpful/sensible suggestions only please.
I'm teaching english as a foreign lang. It's going ok, but I have some serious issues with my teenage group. They are aged 12-13ish. In short, I'm losing control of the group. They're perpetually dicking around, even one of my colleagues heard it from an adjacent room. I've tried some tricks such as those suggested in my prev. quest, but I feel I'm losing them, I feel humiliated and intimidated by them, and put simply, I'm scared.
You may ask why don't I raise it with my bosses which i've sort of done, but 1) it's a business (priv. lang sch) and they're really interested in bottom line 2) the woman that manages us is just a really horrible person, we're pretty unanimous on that and I fear her even more than the kids!
So my question: what can I do to alleviate the situation short of resiging (and then being out of work)

Classroom management is the most important skill for a teacher to have, in my opinion. Why is it so difficult to learn? Does it get easier over time? My first year teaching was a disaster. I had little CM and no one to mentor/help me. I'm planning on going back to teaching next Septemter (sub) and I'm terrified of not being able to control the class. Any ideas/thoughts?

I am trying to figure out where I wan't to move after I am done with college b/c I hate NY state and would NEVER want to teach here. If it makes any difference I am going to be an elementary teacher and if the subject concentration makes any difference that is math.

I'm currently collaborating on a book dealing with classroom discipline. Would you consider classroom discipline problems to be the #1 problem facing the teachers of today? If not - where do discipline problems fall on the totem pole? What techniques do you utilize to deal with these problems? Would you find a book that had a unique way of dealing with them useful? Thank you.
