Costa Rica is located in Central America, between Nicaragua and Panamá. Seven provinces, which are San José, Alajuela, Heredia, Cartago, Puntarenas, Guanacaste, and Limón. San José is the capital. It is a country in the Central American isthmus between Nicaragua and Panama. It includes the Island of Cocos, 483 km to the SW. Official languange: Spanish and Official Currency is Colon of 100 centimos.
Area: 50 900 sq km (19 653 sq mi). Capital: San José. Main ports: Limón o (on the Caribbean) and Puntarenas (on the Pacific). Population (1981 est.): 2 276 676. The inhabitants are mainly of Spanish and mixed descent, with a dwindling Indian population. Economy: chiefly agricultural, the main crops being coffee, bananas and sugar (the principal export). Almost 75% of the land is forested with valuable woods, such as mahogany, rosewood and cedar. Mineral resources include gold, haematite ore and sulphur. History: it was discovered by Columbus in 1502.
