Cities are a smaller municipal population that lies within a state. In other words, there are many cities within a state.

States could be best explained to persons not from here as republics or provinces. Sections of our country that have been mapped out and are often divided and bordered by major rivers.

Inside these sections, we have our individual cities and towns. States in the USA are responsible for much of their own self-government, and so are the cities, just on a smaller scale.

The United states is divided into 50 states with each state being self governing while still being under Federal laws and statutes. Each of these states have various counties with cities and towns each under their own municiple (or sometimes county) governments. These smaller governments handle issues that are specifically pertinent to their city, town or county. They still fall under the authority of their states laws, and US federal law.
