I think part of it is because the song remains the same each time you hear it. And you can expect it to be the same the next time you hear it. When you are studying for a test, you may be studying several different subjects with questions different from those you have seen in the past. Also, there is the problem of not knowing what questions will be asked. The teacher has pages from which to take test questions, but you can't know what they are in advance, so you have that additional stress which inhibits memorization.

About memorizing lyrics: You may find it easy to memorize a song in a musical style you like, but find it difficult to memorize a song in a style you don't like. The same can be said for school subjects: You are better able to study for tests in areas that you like than those areas you don't like.

There is a theory called Multiple Intelligences that says different people learn in different ways. One of the ways people learn is through music, and some people learn better through music than through reading or writing. You may be a musical learner, and there are ways you can incorporate that into your studies. Using songs, rhymes and set rhythm patterns can help you with memorization. Think of one of your favorite songs and re-write the lyrics using some of the things you need to memorize.

It really depends on the way that you learn. I also have a hard time memorizing info for a test until I learned how to "sing" what I need to remember. Try it, for the most part it works.

it's truly, a different part of your brain doing the memorizing. thats why they think, in old cultures before writing, that a lot of the history was memorized in a song-chant form. they think the iiad and the odyssey, before they were written down, were sung, too. it's easier to do for whatever reason. who could just memorize the odyssey? but with music you can

Because subconsciously your brain will memorize things better if there is no pressure to memorize them. Memorizing for a test requires work and puts pressure on your brain. But just listening to a song takes no real effort.

Motivation and Inspiration...

Without the two, you will not learn anything. Music or otherwise. School can be dull.

Christopher Columbus, the Founding Fathers and Abraham Lincoln were all nice guys, but, then again, there was Elvis, Sinatra, the Beatles.....

It's called multimedia. the more varied the sensory input the better it is retained. If the information to your test was put to music you'd remember it quite good. Or if it could be put to a dance routine, motion picture, etc

Put your information into a song or chant form!
I taught my students how to spell autumn by putting it to a cheer- we spelled "A-u-t-U-m-n, gooooo autumn!!"
It's dorky, but it really works! They all got it right on their spelling test!
