I've got an A level in Maths. Never needed to use any of it in real life. Ever. Not once.

Wouldn't subjects that teach about, eg understanding differences in culture, have been far more useful?

I have just returned to teaching and have responsibility for the R.E teaching in a multi faith school in years 1 and 2. As we enter the festival of Ra madam I am trying to plan and effective lesson for my 2 classes. I would appreciate help both with facts about the festival and also effective ways of conveying the meaning to the children.

I guess they're paid by the hour- but
What is the average going rate?
Are there different rates according to subject?
Are there different rates according to how long they've been a teacher?
What are the general/average terms and conditions of working as Supply Teacher?
What pitfalls should a Supply Teacher look out for?
Are they paid gross or net?
Do they pay their own N.I.?
I'm guessing they're not covered if they're off sick, take a day off etc - but am I right?

I was just thinking about who was the greatest influence (in the realm of standard education) on me, was wondering if anyone else has ever had the same thought.

For me, it was Mr. Brisbin. Grade 11/12 Geography/Travel & Tourism. Probably the best course I've ever taken in any school I've enrolled in.

Also, Mr. Fuentes of Grade 9 Geography.

These are probably the only teachers I remember and, most likely, ever will.

My 4 year old son is very bright, but his teacher bases her pre-kindergarten curriculum on how fast the slowest child learns. For example, they are only working on letter recognition, but he can already read. He becomes very bored in class and has been acting out.

I have read the Texas Educational Agengy's Parent's Rights Guide, but I can't seem to find any reference to gifted youngsters.

My questions are:

Do pre-k children have the explicit right to assessment testing?

Do they have the explicit right to an accelerated education if it is deemed necessary by assessment testing?

There are several other factors involved in this situation that are warranting an interview with the principal, and I would like to have my facts in front of me, as it were.

Thanks!
