Anything by Margaret Peterson Haddix, she has the Shadow Children Series, Turnabout, Double Identity, and others out. Don't blame me if he can't eat or sleep because he's reading any of those books! MPH is an amazing writer who brings a lot of science into her stories and they come out awesome! I particularly loved Double Identity.

The Alex Rider Series are excellent! I've recently read Ark Angel and it was GREAT. It's great fiction. Alex Rider is a boy who's been hired by the CIA...really great, exiting books.

The Artemis Fowl (three books out) are also great! All three books are thrilling and exiting to read. These books are kind of like thrilling fairy tales (there's goblins and pixies)...definitely NOT the normal fairy tale and all the boys love to read them.

Of course there's the tried and true Series of Unfortunate Events and Midnight for Charlie Bone, but the books I named above, in my opinion are much better reads. And yes, Captain Underpants is funny but if he's read the other books then they're below his grade level and he should be reading harder books.

I'm an elementary school librarian, so I wish I was at work and could do a quick search of the shelves. In addition to the others that have been suggested, I would add the Young Wizards Series by Diane Duane, Circle of Magic books by Tamora Pierce, anything by Cornelia Funke (Inkheart, Inkspell, Dragonrider, The Thief Lord), the Enchanted Forest Series by Patricia Wrede, and Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini.

If he wants to branch out beyond fantasy, try Hatchet by Gary Paulson, anything by Roland Smith (I particularly like Sasquatch), or something by Will Hobbs (Ghost Canoe and Kokopelli's Flute are two favorites). Bill Wallace is good, particularly with animal stories. Peg Kehret does excellent mystery and suspense.

Hope this helps!

Any of the books that were written by Tiki and Ronde Barber. (not sure of the spelling) My 8 year old grandson loves all their books.

Captain Underpants.

Take him to a book store and let him pick out what he likes. I always tried to encourage my children and grandchildren to read and we never miss a school book fair. We also go to the library all the time.

Series of Unfortunate Events is a must. So good.

Also, The Kid in the Red Jacket by Barbara Park.

Magic Tree House books by Mary Pope Osbourne. Also, he may like the Eragon series. I'm not sure who it's by. Jerry Spinelli writes good children's novels.
