I answered Oprah's question and it is lost in the tens of thousands of other answers. I've been rethinking my reply and would like to change it. So, I've adapted the question to fit only home-school people.

My answer is this: I would use it to help a family get started in home-education. I would take them to a conference with thousands of other home-school families and I would buy them the Robinson Curriculum, a good laser printer, all of the paper and pencils that they would need for 12 years, The First Reader from Eagle Forum, flashcards, plenty of classic literature and fuel for going on field trips.

I am waiting to see a tape of this show. But I have heard that it was highly unbalanced and prejudiced against home-schools.

Please describe the reality of your home-school.

The spectrum is very broad -- not one family's education system will be an identical match of another. And that is the beauty of having individual freedom.

The freedom to learn and to teach our children according to our own chosen method is a wonderful thing.

As far as I can tell Dr. Phil is not an expert on home-education. Nor is he an expert within the public or private education sytem. How can he know anything about home-schooling unless he has done it? Hear-say is not even excepted in a court of law but masses of people flock to believe a television personality or mere gov't school employees. It is better to find out first hand about home-education. Home-schools are not a mysterious thing -- there are tens of thousands all around us.

I've been homeschooled since I was in grade 2, now I'm in grade 9, I want to go to school next year for grade 10. Have any other homeschoolers ever done this? If you have did it work out all right?

((Please, if you don't like homeschooling, do not comment. This is strictly for those who are advocates of homeschooling.))

Right now, I attend public school but have fallen ill recently, and I think the time missed and the work to catch up makes now the perfect opportunity to switch to home school. As of the past few years, I am not very social already and I don't go out often, don't participate, and I know I never will. It's my personality, my OCD, and I can't change.

I think home school would be best for me, as it takes me away from the disgustingly slow paced public school system and puts me into an actual educational system rather than one big teenage party.

However, because I am already anti-social, my mother is horrified at the idea of holing me up at home for the time I usually spend at school. But I believe that is secondary to my education.

How can I convince her to see what I see?

(If you disagree with me, I also don't want your opinion. :-P )

the reason i ask is because people tend to automatically throw in the "your child wont be well socialized"line as the main reason why parents shouldnt homeschool. And I have a 9 yr old who has been homeschooled for all grades thus far, except for grade 2, and he is very socialble, is more respectful towards adults and others and the only time he became shy was when he spent 1 year in public school. We have a son who is 3 who has CP and his therapist comes to visit once a wk at our home to do OT and he even noted that our son was less social while in public school.

Just kind of curious how many people have an actual classroom for their homeschooling vs. how many just use the kitchen table, living room couches and floor... Those who decided to create a classroom, what prompted you to do so?

I'm sorry for this long story, but in order to be able to answer my question, you have to understand some things about me. I'm 17 years old, female, and I'm 4 feet 5 inches tall. My mom didn't want to put us in school, so she home-schooled all of us. But she didn't teach us the things we were supposed to know for our age, so by the time she decided to put us in school, I was 12 years old, and I had to start in 2nd grade with my younger sister who is 15 and in the same grade as me. I got kicked out of a private school in June this year, age 17 in 7th grade. My mom is convincing me to study at home and get my GED. But my dad and my older sister are convincing me to go back to school. I already missed out on my teen years, because I've been hanging out with younger kids since 12, and now I'm almost 18. My dad and sister say I should go back to school because I'd be missing out on my prom and all that. No one in my family ever finished school and went to college. So what should I do? Help!

My son is 8. He's in the gifted class and he does have a good teacher this year. He won teacher of the year last year. He's also in advanced choir two times a week. Now, the music teacher made my son cry by embrassing him in front of the whole class my son just sat in his chair and cried and the teacher did nothing. I knew someone who worked at this school and said 3-5 th graders were found on campus doing drugs! Most days my boy comes home saying so and so cussed him out. My boy is small for his age and therefore an easy target. I want to take him out of school starting next year but I don't know how you homeschool. Plus with my son being of advanced intelligence I don't know if I'll be able to keep up years from now. He says I am a great teacher, I teach him over the summer so he doeesn't fall behind. Does anyone have any HOMESCHOOL sites? Do you home school? How does it work?? I am in California, in the southern area.

I will be homeschooling three of my children next year. They will be in 3rd, 1st, and Kindergarten. We just pulled our 2nd grader out of public schools, and are currently using A BEKA. I'm noticing minor problems, nothing serious, with Math and Language. Math is fast paced, with not much review or supplemental/practice work. My son understands and completes assignments, but soon forgets skills he seemed to have mastered. Language is very slow and not as advanced, and I'm doubling his load in this book just to give him 15 minutes of work on the subject. I need something with the lesson plan mapped out for me, and which doesn't cost a small fortune, as I will be buying for three next year. I'd also like something engaging, and not just based on memorizing, as my children are easily bored. The more I research various publishers, the more difficult the decision becomes. I can't afford to make the wrong choice here. Any recommendations and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

My best friend got taken away from her family. Her stepdad is crazy and my friend is home schooled. Her step dad did NOT WANT HER TO BE HOMESCHOOLED!!! Her dad also HATES HER OLDER BROTHER. So he called Difus. He told them that Her brother was sexually mallesting her younger sister. He thought that all they would do was take her brother to jail and they wouldn't let her be home schooled anymore. His plan back fired and they took the her and her little sister to foster care. Her mom used to have a mental problem but by the grace of God, she was healed. But the court held that against her. They treated her mom like she was crazy and her step dad like he was a god. Now she is back in the WORST SCHOOL IN THE STATE and even if she gets to go back home, she's not gonna be home schooled. Her mom said that when and if she gets her back, they were gonna move to another state!!! I'll probably never get to see her again. Please help me deal with this situation and also please pray for her.

As a homeschooled child of fifteen I'll admit that I'm terribly pompus and generally think myself smarter than most highschool students. I know perfectly well that this is a pretty unhealthy outlook on the world --but I honestly haven't seen anything to dissprove my theory that homeshooled students have better vocabularies and are more likely to pick up information.

I was just wondering if anyone older, wiser and generally less pubescent and hormonal had some insight?

It has been mentioned in another question that home-schoolers might be ridiculed and shunned by potential employers and college recruiters because they might be wearing a denim jumper or frumpy mom-clothes. (Poor boys..... I hope they are NOT wearing the jumpers!!! ;-) Well, maybe the girls do and maybe they don't.
My home school students don't seem to have a problem with style. And SO WHAT if others dress in other than the preppy, cool, brand-name, media promoted garb?
It is supposed that others might be mean to them.... Is this true? Will you yourself be mean to someone that you meet if they are dressed differently than you?
Will a boss deny the job to a qualified applicant because he isn't wearing the status-quo Nikes or whatever brand is in vogue at the moment?
Should a college recruiter tell a young person that they can't attend the University because they are in frumpy clothing even though they aced the SAT?

Good students get into college!
Good workers get the job!
