uh. . .why is this in home schooling?
I agree that's NOT FAIR
Did you CHOOSE to be in the union?
In some states, you can choose to decline but no one in the union or HR will tell you
Even in other states, you can play the contract fee, which is less than the dues, its your way of saying 'no thanks, I don't won't to support a bunch of crooks'. You can spend days before any one will tell you how to that also, but it is your right, there is no true 'closed shop' that's illegal
Actually it sounds like you were paid too much, if this is your first check
The union should also get initiation fees
If you are working part time, are you being charged dues at the full time worker rate?
This really stinks because most committee men and bargaining reps will NOT go through the effort to RETURN dues, hell, they won't even admit you were over charged
Can't you find a job in a store where a union does not get your money?

Being part of the union could pay off really well in time. The union protects you from unfair firing, negotiates to win you as a worker a lot of benefits, makes sure that you will be given a fair chance of merit and seniority-based promotions and raises. Although it seems like you can't afford to be in a union (because of the dues), really you can't afford to NOT be in the union especially if you plan on keeping that job.
Plus, you shouldn't have to pay union dues like this all the time. That's 33% of your income. your dues won't be that high.
If you have questions about deductions you should meet with a supervisor and remain polite and curteous during the meeting to learn about what the deductions are for.

1) Why is this in homeschooling?
2) No, they will not give you back union dues.
3) Why are you asking strangers about this? You should be asking your manager. You might also find out if you can opt out of the union.
4) If you can't opt out of the union, be prepared to have that amount taken off for each week you work.

It sounds like they took a whole month's dues at once. My husband is in the IBEW (electricians) and only has about $6 a week taken out of his check, if that. No, you don't get those back, even if you quit.

It's called paying taxes. We all do it. Learn to live with it.
