Home Schooling

[Selected]: All categories Education & Reference Home Schooling

I'm to a breaking point. I love the idea of public schools, socially but the quality of education has me between a rock and a hard place. While I want my children to be able to do "normal" things I prioritize education BEFORE riding a yellow school bus, recess, and cafeteria food.

What made you choose to home school your children?

Are you a part of a home schooling group in your community?

What is a typical day like for you?

How do you get through the scrutiny of criticism for your choice?

I am a dedicated person. I’m an organizer and planner by nature. I love doing all those “teacher” things but at the same time I worry if I would be doing a disservice to my children by taking the less popular route.

Please, if you have any great home schooling sites with statistics or relevant information it’d be greatly appreciated! My children have yet to go to kindergarten so that would be where I’d be starting at.

Thank you all for your thoughts and information!

I'm going to tutor a kid for high school algebra and I have no idea what would be fair compensation for my time. I am an junior physics major. It would only be a few hours a week, if that.

My DD is bright. She already knows ABC's and letter sounds, can count to 40, shapes, colors, patterns, grouping etc. I didn't think we would have to advance into learning so quickly but we do. We are at a point where I want to work on her fine motor skills. We are working with scissors and crayons but not effectively. She needs work on drawing a straight line and cirlcles. Is there a ciurriculm out there that will assist her in developing physically and not academically. Something that can give me ideas to help her. She really likes having a book to work in though.

My son will be almost 6 by the time he enters kindergarten. He will more than likely be reading, writing and doing math at a 2nd grade level. (He's well into 1st grade now.) I am a school teacher by trade (before I was a mom), and I am open to the idea of homeschooling.

The trouble is that my son is very shy and takes a long time to transition to new situations. He's never been to preschool and already hates the idea of going to school. He even cries at the idea. (I'm a teacher, so obviously I've talked plenty about school and how fun it is. We've even visited several!) I want to do the right thing for him. Would it be better to keep him home a few more years and let him become more social at his own pace? Or would I be making things worse by keeping him out of the "system" and making him transition at a time when all the other kids are used to it? (We've decided we don't want to homeschool past 8th grade if we did it.)

I am considering letting my children homeschool. My son is 5 and daughter 9. My daughter is struggling with studies because of her friends. She is wanting to study what people are wearing versus her work. She has failed 5 subjects. I am afraid she will fail but I know she is very intelligent. I want her to succeed but with public school being the way it is here I dont think she will stand a chance no matter how much behind her I am. My son is opposite. he has caught on to things that took her over a year to even figure out. I want to make the best decision for my children. Can any parents tell me if my children are too young for this and how does homeschooling work?? Is it worth it in the longrun?? Please help.

I have gone to a public school and I am in the 10th grade. I don't really like school because people are so into drugs etc. I want to be focused on school. And no this will not affect my social life because I have been student government president for 4 years straight and I have a ton of friends I can hang out with. Will I be "deprived of learning"? Will I receive the education I need? Will I still be able to enroll into a good college?

My daughter is a 9th grader in highschool and very bright. She wants to learn more independenly but I am not sure that we can give her the education that the trained teachers can. Furthur more she has epilepsy and with school asking more of her this year (staying up late studying) her seizures have gotten worse. One of the side affects of her medication is weariness and exhaustion. She definetely is experiencing those and I believe they are effecting her ability to do well in school. Would it be a mistake to take my daughter out of school for 10th grade when she does have a strong social network in school but she is so exhausted and having a difficult time. We mainly are open to homeschooling because it will allow her to learn at the pace that she can while still keeping a relaxed life and living outside of the school environment.

My 9 year old son has autism and is currently in mainstream public school. He is not doing very well and just does not have the comprehension.
If I decide to home school him, so that he can get the one on one and most of all so that he can learn at his own speed as oppose to class room, where do I get the lessons and what kind of support do I expect from the school, if any?
Also, if you have experience or know of any other alternative schooling or practice for autistic child, please let me know. Thanks

Most jobs nowadays require at least a high school diploma or GED in order to obtain employment. Since not every student is college material or will necessarily complete college, how will you ensure that your children are able to compete for jobs which require a high school diploma, especially if they will not complete college?
