In what year did world war one start?

I am doing a report and i can't seem to find what year it actually started all the sites say different years so I would like to know what year you think it did. Thank-you!

On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip shot and killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne, and his wife, in Sarajevo.

This is usually taken as the action the precipitated the Great War. However, not all the countries that we eventually involved in the conflict declared war at the same time. Britain declared war in August 1914 wereas the United States did not enter the conflict until April 1917. This could explain the differences you are finding in your research.

Sometime in the 1600's maybe even 1700's. There were cross continental wars between Spain, England, France, and even the Dutch. In each of their wars land was lost and gained on at least 4 or more continents. Thus the first world wars occurred before we even had tanks. In the end the spanish lose. The dutch are the first to lose most of their possesions. The French and the Spanish are next to begin declining and then the English take a big hit but actually maintain the majority of their colonies into modern times. So technically the British won but in truth technology and population forced the reduction of territories in favor of efficient economy.
