I'm going to tutor a kid for high school algebra and I have no idea what would be fair compensation for my time. I am an junior physics major. It would only be a few hours a week, if that.

if you are a college student without a math degree (undergrad) then $25 per hour is fair, $35 if you have to go to them.

If you have a bachelores then $40-$50 is fair

If you have teacher certification the going rate here in New York is about $60 per hour

These are so long as it is 1 on 1 tutoring, if you do multiple kids at once then $15/$25, $25-$35, $35-$50 per kid is acceptable.

The going rate depends on the state you live in. When I tutored I generally charged $10-$15 to high school students (Indiana) per half hour about 10 years ago. Be Careful though... some states require that you have a teaching license before you offer professional tutoring services. (Virginia for example.) If you are not sure what to charge, you may check with the department head ofr your school. I'm sure they have been approached some time over the last few years about providing tutoring for students.

The rate for a fully credentialed teacher as a tutor is twenty dollars per hour in my district. However, I have tutored privately for $10/hour, out of consideration for people's finances. Still, it would not be inappropriate to ask for more than that. If you charged $15, for example, that is still only $75 for five hours. I wonder how much Sylvan charges? (It's a lot.)

HS algebra will be very easy for you to teach (I think), if you are a physics major...so this wont be too tough..thus, anywhere between $5 and $10 seems reasonable unless this child has a verrryyy tough time in the subject and you have to put a lot of time into teaching him each lesson.

i might grant the going value for babysitting on your section. i do no longer advise that tutoring heavily isn't useful, however the HS baby isn't a qualified instructor and the babysitting value is approximately what a teenager-age ought to assume to make at a activity.
