I love all things grammatical and language related. Recently I have noticed something being used, mainly in reporting style writings, which I cannot remember ever learning about! It is where the writer is reporting on something that someone else has said or re-stating something already written and they do this - [His] attention was twice called to the warning signs. So what do the [ ] 's denote?

Can anyone enlighten me please?

Me and my wife are from New Orleans and plan to move back in a couple of years. I am starting Pre-Med this fall and want to start learning other languages. New Orleans has a large Vietnamese community, so my goal is to learn Vietnamese down the road because most people that speak a second language in the United States speak either Spanish or French. I want to be different.
None of the colleges I am prospecting teaches Vietnamese, but one of them offers Japanese and Chinese (Manderin).
Personally I am more interested in Japanese, as I am infatuated by their culture and would love to at visit Japan a few times.
But if my ultimate goal is Vietnamese, would either language help me more with Vietnamese? Maybe one is more similar in linguistics, word roots, or characters.
And if anyone happens to have any tips it would be helpful. I have wanted to at least pick up a second language for a while, but my goal is to also look good to a Medical School and/or Hospital.

I have a 4.0 gpa, like 6 college credit classes, sophomore class treasurer, junior class president, mock trial captain, student council, mission and liturgy committee, model un, kindergarten psr teacher, lots of community service and church activities

i want to go to a catholic college if possible. i am very scholarly and love to learn. i want to go to a pretty academic college, but i want to it be fun too. i figure yale and harvard are out of the question.. but im considering notre dame or villanova? or those to high? im also trying to get into a school that will give me a scholarship for most of tuition... im only willing to pay about $10,000 a year out of my own pocket.

I felt that you were gradually feeling closer to me over time because of the sharing of our past relationships and disappointments with each other.
if there is a better word for relationships and disappointments let me know. I am trying to say this I felt that we were getting closer becuase of the fact that we shared our past relationships and disappointments with each other. That is how my boyfriend and i bonded and i wanted to let him know that because we opened up with each other about our fears disappointments it made us be close. Please rewrite that sentence for me with better wording if needed and grammar. Anyone with grammar or writing skills please advise thanks
should I take out the word gradually or does it flow ok. How should I rewrite this, are there any commas needed?

I am in a horrible situation with my prior college which will result in having a withdrawal failure for a semester I never withdrew 4 years ago. It's already bad enough they're charging me (at least they're letting me settle - from $9760 to $6800 - which I still think is ridiculous) but now my good transcript is screwed.

Many people have told me to just apply to the new college as a freshman. I don't know...I have until January...

Just curious. My hope is to get break into the top ten lawschools in the nation, but i'm afraid that the name of my school is nearly as prestigious as Ivy League. Right now, i'm in community college and knockin' out core credits. I'm attending CC because of money reasons and to sharpen my study skills, and there is no risk involved if i fail. So far, i'm getting a 4.0 in the Honors program that my CC offers. I plan on transferring to a 4-year-school, but have not decided if i should i go to a prominent private school, where i'll have to pay back my loans till the day i die, or a state school, where i can receive a scholarship and most importantly, not worry about debt. I plan to study abroad for a semester. With that said, i'm more lenient to the cheaper option of state school. I'm wondering if the lack of prestige will hurt my chances of top 10 law schools, eveen if i continue to display an immaculate school record.

Several years ago I became a university professor. For 15+ years prior to that as a working professional, I wasn't a neat freak by any stretch, but if I needed to, I could get my office back into good shape within a few hours. Now it seems completely beyond my control. There's one secretary for the entire department, and she has a bad back, so it's not as if I can delegate my filing to anyone else. There never seems to be enough time in a day to get my work done, deal with all the students who want to talk, AND manage the influx of paper. I don't recall EVER having so much of it to deal with before! I feel like I'm being buried alive in the stuff, and I don't want to become like some of my colleagues who just create what appear to be perpetual towers of doom in every corner. Help!!
