Education & Reference - 10 July 2006

When I recruited for the military, I preferred an applicant with a G.E.D.. At least I knew the applicant could read and write and pass the entrance exam. A diploma told me little more than the fact that the applicants teachers contiued to let him pass up the ladder.

Anyone else's thoughts?

I've been pondering this one: should children be OBLIGATED to be educated, or could they willingly opt out of being part of the public (or private) education system? School would instead be something that was encouraged by parents or caregivers, but never a legal requirement.

I'm thinking of this in terms of the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". In terms of liberty, could an American child willingly opt out of attending school either publically or privately, and instead live life in any terms that they want, opting instead to educate themselves anyway that they choose?

Should there be laws requiring public school?

(And I'm not looking for fiery, angry responses. I'm just curious what people think, and if there is a valid argument for requiring public school, or if, by the terms of the Declaration of Independence, does liberty entitle one to be free to choose whether or not they wish to attend a school system?)

USA has very different Ideologies with many different groups. This is very dangerous because each divided Nation would be destroyed. In USA there are many Insurgent Groups and very dangerous, lets say terrorist groups. If we sugest an ideology accepted by all cultures, will it be accepted? Yes if it is convincent. I am currently a Master's Student in the Field of Communication Studies. I am interested in getting my Ph.D. but was wondering if I should stick to Communication or branch out into business or education. I would like to eventally do Management consulting, leadership, or diversity training. What I would like to know is what are companies looking for? What would you have done if you could go back and choose any field of study?
