Anyone who went to Ormskirk Grammar School between 1973 and 1978 please post an answer or drop me a mail. I believe there was a school reunion some time ago, which I missed, and was just seeing if I could catch up with anyone. Cheers

Ormskirk Grammar School Reunion

I can't believe that I'm in the top 16% - I am broke all the time!!!!! I guess I've got two children and live in an expensive area. Anyway - yes you're right and that's the problem with grammar schools. They are fantastic for kids who wouldn't otherwise have access to such a good education. However, the alternative - secondary moderns - class 11 year olds as failures and their educational experience is one of disillusionment and low aspirations. Obviously there are some exceptions to the figures you've given above and some poor, working class kids got to go to a grammar school and used their brains to hoist themselves out of poverty and raised their live chances. Also there are some like John Prescott and Steve Redgrave who went to secondary moderns and still went on to achieve great things. However, for the vast majority access to grammar schools depended on whether the parents were middle class, from a good background themselves and who had benefitted from a good education themselves. It's much, much harder for a poor child with no computer, not many books and low parental expectations to gain access to a grammar. If I could have my way I'd ban grammar schools and private schools. That way, all the positive parenting and fantastic PTA and governor help which these schools get would be evenly distributed throughout the nation's children and we'd all be better off - economically and socially.
