I'm going to be going to NYC with a couple of friends just to hang out. Are there any good restaurants that are cheap, good, have vegetarian options, and have a cool atmosphere?

Preferably Mexican/Italian/American

I come from Europe where service is already included in the price you pay, where servers get a full pay for their job and where a tip is given only for a service that was exceptionnaly good. So, I have very few insights on how much I should tip and in what circumstances. I know the rule for the drinks in the bars: 1 drink = 1 $ tip. I know the rule in the restaurants: tip = 2 x the tax. But I'm not sure if this applies to every kind of restaurant. For instance, do you tip in the diners? And if no, how can I indentify a restaurant in which tip is required before the waiter yells at me out of rage...

We will be staying near Central Park, and wanted to visit some restaurants that are fun. There are no children going (yippee), so theme is not necessarily important. Trendy and fun would be great. And thank you soooo much.
