Stroll Mott Street in Little Italy/Chinatown. There is a great pastry shop name Ferrera's and a ton of really great family owned italian restuarants. Go to these places for lunch because they charge less for lunch than they do dinner but you receive the same portion size. Also you can walk up to the restuarant and look at the menu and decide before you walk in. They post the menus and daily specials along the sidewalk to lure people in. I love eating in Little Italy in NYC. That is an experience in it self and the food is good. For dinner even though you did not ask get chinese take out from china town. It is cheap and the portions are huge and they have the menus on the outside for you to decide before you go in. Word of advice if the locals don't eat there then you should not either. If it does not have a crownd during the lunch and or dinner rush than you can assume that the place is not very good. Good Luck and have fun. I love and miss NYC so much.

Mexican:
Blue Moon Cafe in Chelsea - Eighth Avenue and 17th Street - good food, reasonable prices, fun, not a vegetarian restaurant, but many vegetarian options. Look at the menu:

Cosi. Informal, Italian and all around town. I'm in California, but when I'm in Manhattan I stop into Cosi for lunch or a light supper. The prices are modest, but the quality is very good. There are a number of locations. Cosi is Italian for "thing."

There was the Brewery place near Times Square on like 49th St & I can't remember the name but it was really good & a good value. It's right off Broadway. I want to say Red Rock Brewery but I don't think that's correct. They brewed their own beer & also rootbeer & cherry soda.
