The Leone family sold the restaurant to a large conglomerate in 1959; the new owners kept the name. They finally closed for good more than ten years ago.
Anyone remember Mama Leone's - very mediocre food, but the portions were tremendous and they gave you things to take home, like cheeses and breads. It was a fun place, even though the food wasn't that good.

I remember it with a group of fellow salesmen being entertained by home office staff, April, 1952. A group of 10 or 12. Very plentiful food. Very colorful décor. I thought the food was good but then at 21, a hick at food, I didn't know real Italian. Mom was not a cook. We actually ate Franco American spaghetti at home!
I'm 90 now.

I went there years ago as a little kid with my parents and brother in the mid 70's. I remember not wanting to eat anything other than the hot dogs from the street vendors with push carts or bikes, but my father made me eat there and the linguini with butter and garlic clam sauce was the best I've ever had and I'm 47 years old now. What I wouldn't do to be able to go back in time.
No cell phones, beepers, laptops, internet, google.....it was a simpler time

I graduated flight attendant school at JFK in 1977. A bunch of us from the class went to Mamma Leone s to celebrate and had a great time. It was a real treat since we didn t make a lot of money then and for us, it was kind of pricey, but it was a special occasion. Somehow, I got food poisoning and barely made it back to my apartment in Queens, but I d do it all over again if the place was still there. NYC in the 70 s, what great memories!

We went there on our honeymoon in 1982....The food was good, put a belly on you. The portions WERE huge! QUESTION: What street was Mama Leone's on? Btw 7th and 8th I believe...
We stayed at the Paramount, on 46th street. I see its now a "botique" spot. Was just a joint back then. The rooms are TINY....and $300 a night in 2014! We had a great time! Even the hookers were friendly !!!! :.)

Well, some good restaurants are The Capital Grill. That is a good steak place and has many good appitizers. Another one is STK on Ganzavort St. It has a few interesting things if you like seafood and steak. If you are into pizza the best place I know is Patsy's Pizza. It has a wonderful sause. Another pizza place is Two Boots pizza. They are located in many different parts in NYC.
