Finally going to NY for my birthday. Just a quick weekend trip. I know there are tons of restaurants. It sure would be helpful if someone gave me some names to get started -- all price ranges.

I'll be in the Time Square area.

Le Madeleine on the corner of 43rd and Ninth serves a good three course prix fixe dinner for $32.

West 46th Street between 8th and 8th Avenue (very close to Times Square) has so many restaurants, the block is known as "Restaurant Row". There are at least five Italian restaurants.
One I highly recommend is Becco - it's owned by the tv chef and cookbook author, Lidia Bastianich and her son. They serve a special lunch for about $18 -the dinner is about $25 -three pastas (they change every day) - all you can eat and a delicious appetizer of either a Caesar salad or a platter of mixed seafood with grilled vegetables. It gets crowded - you should make a reservation.

Pomaire is one of my favorites - it's New York's only Chilean restaurant - excellent fresh fish, wonderful bread, charming waiters and a great wine cellar.

Brazil, Brazil - a really fun place - you have different options - cold salad bar about $10, cold salad bar and hot buffet about $14 and salad bar, hot buffet and MEATS - about $18. If you get the all you can eat meat, the waiters come by with huge skewers of steak, roasts, chickens, spare ribs - if you want some, you turn the flag to green, if you don't want it or are taking a rest, you turn your flag to red. You can also order something a la carte here. Desserts and beverages are not included in the price.

There is a nice bar/restaurant, the Joshua Tree, that serves a very good lobster with baked potato and corn for $15. Really good gooey desserts here, too.

If you like Spanish food (from Spain, not Mexico - it's an entirely different cuisine), Costa del Sol on 50th Street and Ninth Avenue is wonderful - for $25, you get a complete dinner with a ton of choices - AND IT's GOOD! You get a choice of soup or salad - (I never order salad when there's another choice, so I can't comment). My favorite soup is the Caldo Gallego - from Galecia Spain - a delicious hearty soup with bacon, chorizo sausage, white beans, kale and other vegetables; you can also order the cold gazpacho or a chicken soup with noodles. You have a choice of more than twenty entrees - at least six different shrimp dishes - my favorites are the very lightly floured shrimp with wine sauce and the garlic shrimp - HUGE portions. You can also order salmon, paella, a whole lobster with butter sauce, various chicken dishes, mixed seafoods, veal., pork chops. These come with saffron rice and string beans - large platters on the table for everyone. You also get dessert and coffee - the cheesecake is good, but you can have flan or rice pudding or icecream. As if all this food weren't enough of a bargain, if two of you order this three course dinner, you can get a bottle of red or white wine for only $6 more ($3 each)

These are my favorites near Times Square, but New York's best restaurants aren't in Times Square. The East Village has many inexpensive, interesting restaurants. Greenwich Village has some wonderful restaurants. Chinatown is a great place to eat (and shop). Tavern on the Green is a beautiful restaurant, but the food is very bad. Very few New Yorkers go there anymore, it's all tourists.

Have a very happy birthday!

If you want something a little different from Chinatown, check out K-Town (Korea Town). It is a block of Korean restaurants on 34th Street by the Empire State Building.

I also recommend Onera's (79th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam). It is a fabulous Greek restaurant on the Upper West Side. This also happens to be a really nice neighborhood to walk around. After dinner you can grab cupcakes for dessert from the Buttercup Bakeshop (72nd between Broadway and Columbus).

Depends on how much you want to spend. Carmines is a good italian spot. Not pricey and the portions are so big you have to share. And it's in the 42nd street area. I heard that ruby foos is good for chinese. And they opened a new juniors restaurant somewhere i believe in that area. If you want to look a place for reviews and price ranges and menus go to www.citysearch.com
or go to www.eats.com because the break it down by the different sections of nyc and you can see the menus also.

Here are three great, non-chain places for your visit.
Ben Benson's steakhouse. 123 W52nd. Be sure to tell them that it is your birthday! You won't get a break on the price, but the staff will sing to you.....
Patsy's Italian restaurant. W 56th street - fantastic pasta and great people watching.
Victor's also on 52nd street Great Cuban food.
These are not inexpensive places, but all three are real NYC restaurants and worth the price... You will enjoy great service, greater drinks, and wonderful ambiance... Since you are staying in the Times Square area, all three are nearby... Happy Birthday!

"Tavern on the Green" by West Central Park. Its expensive but excellent food. We were there for our birthday and I must say its one of the best. Drinks about $12 a glass of wine. Google it, you might get a price list. They also add 20% gratuity to the price. Bon apetit.
