It's true you can get viruses etc, which can wreck your operating system. You need to have a disc to reinstall, reinstall all the programs you ever had, and keep your files in a spot on disc where they are not affected by a system rebuild (not in Documents and Settings). You should have this plan when you start. Sharing things which are not currently available should not be illegal, so you might get a lot out of it. Use a virus checker etc, but something will probably get in every few months.
A suggestion is to keep all your program INSTALLERS in a separate file, so you can reuse them. When reinstalling the OS, install to the Partition previously used. This will erase Documents and Settings, but not other files in other places.
Anyway, what percent of users have had their OS wrecked, and how many have stayed safe, for how long? By the way, Macs are safe.
