Word.

If your names are in table form, columns separated by tabs,
with column headings (I hope),

Control+A to select the whole table

use the Shift key and arrow key to back up to the end of the last line, not below it

click Table
cl Sort
If you have headings, on the bottom, click "header row"

In the window that displays, by "sort text," click the down arrow to select the heading for "last name"

That's it.

If you typed the name and address across the line and ended each with a "return", you have typed your data in one column and it will sort by the first character on the line.

When typing a data file, it is wise to keep the first and last names in separate columns, and the zipcode -- in case you ever send a bulk mailing and want to sort by zip.

Got Word?

If so select the text. Click on Tables (even if the data isn't in a table). Select Sort and select text.
Select options if you need more advanced features.

A spreadsheet program is the best way to build a list of items that can be sorted by any criteria you choose. I recommend the free spreadsheet program at Google. http://www.google.com/google-d-s/b1.html
