You are comparing apples (no pun intended) and oranges. It could not have been the same exact problem on both computers. I had Macs for about 10 years and even though I thought they were better when I had a program crash the entire system had to be restarted. On the PC that is rare unless the program had a task running in the background. Even in that case it only meant that the program that crashed could not be restarted without a reboot.

I had my Mac prior to system X. I would like to know how X and Vista compare.

There are many different things that can cause a system crash.

With the mac, it may have been a small software related issue. Restarting it solved the problem. That could just as easily have happened to your dell.

Most likely, you did not need to reinstall everything on your dell. There would have been options to fix it, but without knowing exactly what happened, I can't tell you what those options could have been.

You just got lucky with the Mac. Crashes happen in varying degrees of intensity. Some destroy your whole system, others only make a single program stop.
Ofcourse, the hardware and software involved play a huge role, but any system that so complex as a fully-functional computer runs the risk of a catastrophic crash, no matter what the hardware or software running it is.
