Other - Computers - October 2006

I have two computers in my house: one that has internet and one who's internet doesn't work anymore for some reason. Well, I'm typing up a story on the non-internet one, and now all of a sudden, all the floppy disks are un formatted. When I try to format, it tells me windows could not complete it. I formatted them on my other comp, but there's still an error messege on the one with the story. Got any ideas to why this might be happening? It worked before.

OK, first things first, I know nothing about computers so please keep it simple!

Basically I have a laptop, about 2/3 years old now, a fairy basic Packard Bell model bought from PC World. The only thing I know about it is that is has 'Easy Note' written down near the mouse pad.

I'm about to start my University dissertation and could do with giving the ol' thing a little more punch- basically so a 10,000 word essay with lots of pictures isn't going to clog things up, what with all my music and videos on there too. Also I am toying with the idea of doing something about the graphics as there are a couple of old games I want to get to while away those long periods of boredom! (Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine!)

So, in laymans terms, what can I do on a shoestring budget, and who are the best people to see?

Please if anyone knows I have no sound coming from my laptop, there is if I play a video clip , but when I go into some sights that should have sound effects there is no sound,I have checked the sound and mute on the computer and its fine.

Hi, my boyfriend has the new flight simulator game but only has a joystick to play it with. He was wondering if you can buy authentic aircraft controlls with yoke pedals. He wants the game to feel more real and having just a joystick just doesnt make it feel real. Any ideas where he can get one from?

I have defragmented the hard drive and compressed old files using the features in Control Panel.

My cat walked across my keyboard and now my computer will only display about 1/4 of the screen at a time - it's so big it can't be displayed all at once. My desktop background is enormous, but the icons are normal size. I've tried restarting. Please help!!!

For some reason the font size on my computer has changed. It was fine last night. It is on everywhere I go. Sometimes the print is so small that I can barely see it. ATI All-In Wonder (I believe 7600 model)
DVD Burner
CD Burner
111G HD
40 G HD
I don't play a lot of games, but I would like to play games like Myst and Riven (already played these though, so newer games like this) and although I have an ATI All-In_wonder TV tuner and this works well, my video card will not support some games. I have done some external mods to my PC and plan on doing more, but I want to know how far can i expand this PC? i.e. Video card (keep in mind I don't want to lose TV tuning capability)? Also my RAM? 256MB blows. If I run more than a couple apps, I'm creeping along. Any other hardware I should get? I would like to spend $500 to $1500 on upgrades. Is this possible?

for example i have 10 files, their names go like this:
