Use a system utility to select which programs are automatically loaded when Windows starts.
Lots of applications are unnecessarily loaded in memory at Windows' startup phase. Some software houses actually do this just to make their applications seem faster: They know that you think your computer is too slow, so they load part of their application in memory as soon as you start your computer. When you actually start the program later, it seems to load quite fast (as it was partially in memory already). It's a vicious circle!
You can use the msconfig utility (click Start - Run... and type: msconfig , then select the Startup tab) to select which programs are loaded at startup. Removing the unnecessary ones can have a very positive impact on your computer's speed. However, be very careful not to deselect necessary items - this can be quite difficult at times as you cannot clearly see which program is actually doing what and if they are necessary, so research is key. A bit of work really but the results can be very rewarding indeed. See the link for more guidance.

If your computer is without internet or network access it will definitely run faster. Occasionally defrag your drive, but only if you have been doing excessive downloading or erasing of files. You can also decrease the amount of memory usage in your system restore. Also use only critical programs as part of your start up. If your computer suddenly slows down, crashes or just doesn't respond, chances are you have picked up something. Look for unfamiliar files in your application data folder. Also discard any other users, folders or duplicate files from your system. Thats a good start.

The best thing for you to do is not open too many applications at once. regularly defrag your hard drive by clicking on start, programs, accessories, system tools and then disk defragment. This pushes all information to one end of the drive, so the computer can get to the free space quicker. You can get some extra memory (RAM) for it from somewhere like ebuyer.co.uk for cheap. having something like ad-aware on their and running it once a week can improve speed, as it will stop nasty programs using system resources. get ad-aware from lavasoft.com.
Other than that, just try not to do too many things at once. keep an eye on software running in the tray, next to the clock.
Hope that helps. Mark

If you look at the bar at the bottom right of your monitor you can see symbols. Hover the cursor over an icon at a time find out what it is and if you know what it is and dont use that program very often right click on the symbol and left click on exit or close program and if you remove enough of these your computer should get faster!

Just go out and buy a 2 GHZ or bigger Proccessor and replace it with our old one. When you do get Internet, you are pretty much dead without Anti-Virus programs and Spyware Cleaners.
