When buying a motherboard for a desktop, you got ATX and MicroATX (for the most part) so you can tell if it will fit in you're case. Well what about for a notebook? I'm looking for a new motherboard for my laptop but I dont know how to tell if it will fit or not. How can I tell?

I have recently been told to take my motherboard and PSU out of the case and turn the motherboard on but how do i do this if it not in the case. Do I have to use a screwdriver to short the connection on the motherboard where you connect the on button on the front panel to see if it will turn on the computer.

I was thinking of building computers and selling them on ebay. I would just sell the box not including any peripherals. For the os I could maybe put linux on it so I don't have to buy windows. Do you think I could make a profit doing this?

Hi. I've tried linking my IBM Thinkpad Laptop to my Toshiba LCD TV via a VGA cable. The image appears on my TV screen, but the whole screen is blue. I've tried changing the resolution on the laptop but that hasn't made any difference. I've been told I may need to download an updated driver but I haven't a clue what I would need. Can anyone help? The thinkpad is running with Windows XP if that means anything.

Thanks
J xxxxxxx

Yesterday, I performed a full System Recovery on my computer. The hard disk was formatted and then partitioned into four ''c', 'd', 'j' and 'k'. I began by installing Windows 2000 Pro onto the 'c' Drive followed by Windows XP Pro onto the 'd' Drive and finally Windows Vista onto the 'k' Drive. Today, I performed a full defrag on all three drives using Auslogics Disk Defrag (because unlike the Windows defrag, Auslogics actually displays the files being defragmented). While defragmenting the 'c' Drive (now containing Windows 2000 Pro) I was rather disturbed to see Power Cinema present on the 'c' Drive. You see, Power Cinema had been on the original 'c' Drive with Windows XP (before yesterday's formatting and partitioning). How can this be? A program surviving formatting, partitioning AND the installation of a different OS. I didn't believe such a thing was possible. How do I get rid of defunct programs so they are really gone?

I am in the market for a new computer. I know NOTHING about them.

I am going back to school, so I'll need a computer that can do the basics: word-processing, spreadsheets, etc. Beyond that, I would like to be able to use the internet, maybe play a few games or manage some digital photos.

My budget is in the $800 range. I just need something basic.

I work in IT and an ongoing issue I have with the laptops in our environment (I am laptop support for my company) is that the machines (all IBM systems, various models) constantly connect to both the wired and wireless connections, resulting in various network related problems (such as NOT automatically connecting network drives, slow system performance due to the machine being confused as to which connection to use, etc.). I am aware that I can shut off the wireless radio manually but is there something I can do that will permanently fix the problem?

I'm a website developer. I'm intrigued by Parallels and the ability to run Windows on a Mac. That would be an expensive trip. I've heard lots of good things (here on Yahoo! Answers, and elsewhere) about Macs. I'm like a kid in a candy shop, probably gullible. Tell me the bad things about a Mac, so I can look before I leap. (Now, please, don't just be mean-spirited. Get real!)

In the past I've used a combo method of getting rid of dust inside my desktop computer with: air can, and vacuuming using the brush extension at the end. I've been told that you need a special electronic vacuum to do this because a regular vacuum can discharge static buildup (or something like that). A friend told me that he always uses a regular vacuum. So I tried it and didn't really make direct contact with the mother board, but just used it over the cables, power supply, case walls, and the heat sink fan over the CPU. I would use the air can to blow off dust on the motherboard itself. So, whadda ya think? If I do it this way, will I still risk messing up the computer, and therefore should buy one of those "mini vacuums" instead? Because the blower can doesn't get rid of the dust. It just blows it somewhere else within the case and on the surrounding floor.

I installed 2 gig of memory in addition to the 2 gig I already had. The BIOS says I have 4 gig total but Windows says I only have 3.25 gig. Doesn't matter if I swap the old and new chipsets from slot 0 to slot 1 and vice versa. Clock speeds are all within tolerance (no overclocking).

I have a PC running windows 98 SE that keeps rebooting itself intermittantly. It will sit at the dsektop with no problems but at soon as I run certain programs it just reboots. I tried to do the usual defrag and scandisk and it defragged just fine but rebooted during scandisk twice. This lead me to believe that the hard drive was bad so I ghosted the old one and replaced it. This didn't work. I'm stuck and am not sure where else to look for clues short of throwing parts at it.
