Suggestions:

1) Try another online RAM seller, since crucial.com didn't work for you. How about your computer's manufacturer?

2) Take your computer to a local "mom & pop" style shop and explain what you want to do. It may end up costing you more, but it's worth if to have someone actually work with you and make sure you end up with a solution that works.

PC2100 is 266Mhz (DDR). Make sure that your motherboard will handle a 512MB stick before you buy one. DDR sticks have 184 pins. It doesn't matter in which order they are installed. Make sure that the 512MB stick is also PC2100...if you get faster RAM, it will be slowed down anyway, plus it might cause a bottleneck.

Crucial didn't work?? It's guaranteed to work...maybe you have a bad RAM slot on your motherboard.

Make sure your motherboard can support that much RAM. Secondly, if you are inserting the 512 MB ram stick in the same colour RAM slot as the 128, then they need to be the same frequency. There is a program called CPUZ (google it) that checks your ram frequency.
Make sure your power supply can handle it.
