Working with desktop hardware and laptop hardware is radically different. On most Dell and IBM machines, the harddrive and RAM should be very easy to upgrade (You only remove 1 screw to changeout/upgrade the harddrive and 1 screw to changeout/upgrade the RAM, again on MOST IBM and Dell systems). There are instances though, where the harddrive and RAM are "inside" the keyboard or rather, they are located on the bottom of the keyboard (inside of the machine on top of the motherboard). This is where things get fairly complicated and I would advise you seek the help of a professional if it comes down to this...(you can check your machine manufacturer's website which will have documentation on changing out parts....this will indicate to you exactly where the components your looking to upgrade are and what the best course of action will be.)

I don't know specifically about Alienware as they make pretty high end stuff that may be more upgradeable, but most laptops do not have as many upgrade options as desktops. You are pretty much limited to RAM and hard drive. You can't beat a desktop for upgradeability.

No.
Memory is the same. Tends to be two slots rather than two or four. Memory is a bit more expensive.
Hard drives are easy to change, but there is only one hard drive slot, so copying information from your old small drive to the new big one is a problem. Adding a second internal hard drive for more space is easy on most desktops impossible on a laptop. Hard drives are slower and more expensive.
You get one or two PC slots, so you can add some extra cards - Ethernet, firewire, etc. Bit not the same number as slots as a desktop and the cards are more expensive.
Video - forget it. There are no high power video chips in laptops. Ther eis no way to upgrade your GPU.
Bigger monitor, faster CPU, new motherboard - get a new laptop

You can do some upgrades on a laptop.
Mainly Harddrive, CD Rom, and RAM are easily upgradable.
You don't usually have to open up your laptop to upgrade the HDD...because the HDD is accessible from underneath.
Look under your laptop and you will see 4 screws in a square shape. That's usually where the HDD is.
If you want to open up your laptop it's fairly easy and only requires a screw driver and knowledge of where the screws are.

It is both upgradable and not, laptops are as easy to upgrade like desktops when it comes to upgrading HardDrives, as well as RAM chips, but Video Cards isnt replaceable on Laptops.

Its very possible, depending on how old your laptop is. some laptops have access to the harddrive right on the side, and you can slide it out and slide a new one in, others you have to unscrew from underneath, you can open a laptop, if you have no experience doing this I would recommend having a comp tech do it for you but, you can def. unscrew the bottom half of a laptop off and upgrade your harddrive, your RAM, your video card...everything. Hope It Helps!
