We have begun e-filing in our state and our small law firm needs to purchase a scanner. It has been suggested we use the HP 8270 model. I have read a few poor reviews on this. Any suggestions or recommendations for a profficient scanner?

I'm not positive on exact scanners but I used to work for a lawyer and the only scanner we ever used (although there were others in the office) was the one with OCR programming.

This allows you to scan a file into the computer and it automatically turns to digital format so that you can type/delete etc from the form.

Ours was an Epson 3200 I believe.

Any recommendation would really need more information from you :)

how many people will be using it?
About how many scans a day will the machine get...
do you need to scan to a folder on your network or to multiple folders - do you need to scan to email?
Do you need to scan anything larger than 8.5x11?
Do you need a flat bed ?
or will just an ADF suffice?
Do you need to scan any bulky items such as a book?
Do you just need an independent scanner? Or are you ready to update any existing printer/copier there to encompass printer/scanning/copy/fax? (EG an MFP)

HP Typically makes wonderful products, and has a variety of stand alone scanners that one of them should do the trick :) There's two around the 8270 that you could check out - the N6010 and the 7800. Canon also has some great scanners...

I would think for an office a multifunction machine would be more appropriate. Such as an HP officejet 6110. This is the model I have which is a scanner/copier/printer/fax. Has sheetfed/flatbed options both. It works great and I've had it for almost 5 years. $300

I recommend you check out Microtek brand enterprise scanners. They make excellent scanners for businesses.
