I'm a website developer. I'm intrigued by Parallels and the ability to run Windows on a Mac. That would be an expensive trip. I've heard lots of good things (here on Yahoo! Answers, and elsewhere) about Macs. I'm like a kid in a candy shop, probably gullible. Tell me the bad things about a Mac, so I can look before I leap. (Now, please, don't just be mean-spirited. Get real!)

Apple is more expensive, and most software packages are either the same price or more expensive for Mac OS.

Apple has a closed architecture, which means that they charge a royalty for any hardware or software manufacturer to design to their spec. That means that memory upgrades, hard drives, monitors, mice, keyboards and most hardware items will be more expensive, and you'll have less selection.

True - Microsoft charges developers to certify their application to run on Windows, but the major business applications are just more costly for Apple than for Windows because of the laws of supply and demand. There are WAY more Windows PC's, so R&D costs are more easily recovered.

Lastly, you will find (although less and less) the internet to be more Windows-friendly, between download games, certain web sites, and similar.

One of the biggest downsides is price. PCs can use some lower quality parts and be produced in higher numbers, which brings down the cost quite a bit. Of course, a $500 laptop PC isn't going to last as long, do as much, or run as fast as a $1000 iBook.

The other drawback is 3rd party software and hardware makers still make 95% of their items for PCs. Even with intel chips and Parallels, not everything works on a Mac. Also, you can now run PC stuff on a Mac, but not the otherway round. I once worked up a presentation in Keynote (which apprently only Al Gore and I use...) only to discover the room where I was giving my talk had the projector hardwired to a PC.

PCs suck! ; ) hello developer, I'm a designer... its always nice to meet someone of the other half. All of the good things you've heard about macs are true... Honestly, I haven't found anything bad about my Macs and I've been a user for a LONG time. Every OS that comes out only gets better. From widgets (which Vista copied blatantly), to the dock... every thing is perfect and has been for a long time.
