I live in a large apartment complex and my computer picks up different wireless internet connections. There is one unsecured one and it connects to it. It works fine but I hear commonly that when connected to an unsecured wireless network, it can lead to all sorts of nasty things. I don't want anyone able to send viruses, worms, ect, into my computer and I also don't want anyone to be able to see my documents, pictures and what I do online, such as buying, chat, passwords, ect. How can I protect myself from this? What programs do I need to download? (FREE PROGRAMS PLEASE) Also, do I need to enscrypt anything? If so, how can I do that? What are the steps? Thanks very much!

Dear All,

I have a CISCO 1841 router with VSNL leased Line i/f (V.35) so now I would like to connect one BSNL DATAOne Business Plan 9000 as an additional line for the existing VSNL. I already requested BSNL to issue a Static IP but BSNL issuing only IP and Subnet there is not fixed gateway and the gateway will resolve once we dail PPPoE client.

So what your opinion about the above scenario is it work? What would be the IOS configuration?

Thank you,
Rajesh

I just got a new laptop. My old laptop had no problem connecting to my home wi-fi network. While my new laptop says it sees my home network and it is "in range," it won't connect to it. I click on "connect" and it says "unable to connect." Any idea why? Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to connect two routers to extend the wire.

I have a cable modem connected to the WAN port on the router, and a wire running from the Lan port to the other router. Im not sure whether to put it in the wan or the lan on the second router. And I tried putting it in both, and once I put it in the wan or lan, the first router stops working. When put into the lan, there is a ip conflict.

First router connected to the cable modem is a wireless Dlink D-514

The second is a wired router is a wired router, forgot the number. It is a Di-xxx

I could be doing nothing at all and I start to lag like crazy. Usually, my ping is around 30-40, but when I start to spike, it goes up to 9000 ... this just started this week and I didn't change anything on the computer .. i was on a router when this started happening, so i decided to directly connect my computer to the modem to see if the same happens, and it does! what do i do now? i tried using the dr tcp thing and it seemed to make it even worse; my ping stayed at 9000 as soon as i tweaked the settings according to broadbandreports.com ... thanks!

I don't know the right terminology, but I have friends that have simple wireless connections in their houses. I have a wireless card in my computer that I use to simply connect to whatever network my friends have and I surf the net. I recently realized that I have been visiting sites that I would rather remained hidden, such as banks and credit card sites. Can they see where I have been and access some of my information that I have sent through their network?

Thanks

I am trying to clear the DNS. I am using a wirless connection. When i type on the following message into the command prompt "ipconfig /flushdns" (without the parentheses) it fails to clear the DNS. The message the pops up instead says "Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Funtion failed during operation". Does anyone know what to do? i have also tried displaying the DNS and then clearing it, but it even fails to display the DNS.

I have a mac computer with OS X. I'm planning on getting a D-Link router. Here's my question: Since I have a mac computer with Safari as the internet browser, IF I buy that d-link router, will I still be able to configure it online? I've heard that you need Firefox (which isn't a big deal to download), but I need to know if you MUST have Firefox on a mac to configure a d-link router, or if you can use Safari.
