I am trying to connect two routers to extend the wire.

I have a cable modem connected to the WAN port on the router, and a wire running from the Lan port to the other router. Im not sure whether to put it in the wan or the lan on the second router. And I tried putting it in both, and once I put it in the wan or lan, the first router stops working. When put into the lan, there is a ip conflict.

First router connected to the cable modem is a wireless Dlink D-514

The second is a wired router is a wired router, forgot the number. It is a Di-xxx

This can be done. You will be limited on speed on the second router but you won't notice the difference. Instead of being 100mb for each port they will all share a 100mb line. It will act like a hub. Your problem is they are routers and my guess is both wireless. I don't remember on a Dlink, but I think the address is 192.168.0.1, put that in on the url line of your browser. I don't remember the default user id's and passwords but you can look that up on the web. If it's not 192.168.0.1 try 192.168.1.1, or 1.0. Find the manual on the web. It will have the address and default id's and passwords. You actually want the second router to act simple as a switch, so you will probably have to turn everything off, such as DHCP, the wireless, etc. The lan and wan ports are the same except two wires are reversed on the wan port. You want to use the lan port unless you are using a crossover cable.

turn off all the settings in the WIRED ONE THEN go to Port 1 from the WIRED TO PORT 1 OF THE WIRELESS

BUT FIRST CHANGE THE IP ADDRESS OF THE WIRELESS ROUTER BECAUSE THEY BOTH HAVE THE SAME IP ADDRESS AND THEIR NOT SUPPOST TO

TRY THIS :

Im assuming the default gateway of the router is 192.168.0.1

****** THIS WOULD BE FOR THE DI-514******

Opened Internet Explorer and went to http://192.168.0.1.(OK)
A login screen appears.(OK)
Logged in with defaults. (OK)

If defaults the User name is admin

And the password is (left blank)

You go to HOME ON THE TOP

ANd the you go to LAN on the left

Then were it says IP address you type in 192.168.13.1
subnet leave it the same

then you select Apply on the lower left then you have to log back in to

the router Change the Address bar to 192.168.13.1

you will not be able to do this, it will totally screw up your network and the routers will fight with eachother.

Both routers need a WAN wire going into them, not LAN. So i think you should go with a wireless card

You only use one router, and if necessary, use a range extender. ~
If you want more wired connections, use an Ethernet hub and feed that from one of the routers outputs..
