If you have forgotten the password to access the router then yes, the only way to get into it is to reset the router to the factory defaults.
The info you will need to re-configure it is:
1) Type of internet connection
a) DSL is usually PPPOE
b) Cable is usually Dynamic IP
2) The Username and Password to log into your ISP
Either find the installation guide that came with your router or goto the link below and download the guide for your model router to learn how to configure it.

So you have a router that was configured with a password and you don't know that password so you can't change the configuration. That's a pretty common problem. There is a small hole on either the front or back depending on the model. If you push a toothpick carefully in there and hold it for a few seconds, the router will reset to its original (default) configuration and you can go from there. The default IP address to connect to the router is, I believe, 192.168.1.1. You may want to change that to something easier to type and more convenient for your PC users like 10.1.1.1. Good luck.

I've got a Linksys too, and it took me a while to figure this thing out myself. To reach all your admin stuff, open up your internet browser and in the address bar type in "192.168.1.1" and go there. A dialog box will pop up asking for your username and password. Leave the username field blank and type in the password "admin". This will get you in to all those more advanced things you're trying to find, such as wireless security.

Download the manual from their site. You do need to re-set it, and you will have to re-enter all it's settings.
