i was wondering if anyone could help me decide what desktop computer to buy, it is only going to be used for school work and internet and it won't be used for any thing inparticular e.g. movie making/editing.

For my new self-built pc, i am looking to use a Dual core CPU.

I'd like to know the difference in the few types around, as the price's are so much different.
I dont want to know about popularity of different ones, i want to know performance and speed of the different chips.

I have a firm budget for a CPU.

My possible buys are :
AMD AM2 Athlon 64 X2 4000+ (2.1Ghz , 512kb L2 lache)
INTEL PENTIUM D 2.8 GHz LGA 775 DUAL CORE


I dont think i can afford a core 2 duo, they seem to expensive for my build and i simply dont want to spend money on it, as its more money for the cheapest one, which has a small 1.86Ghz speed.

So whats different between an AMD X2, a Dual core pentium? And possibally a Intel?
I assume its got to be something to do with the Lache?
But what should i look for?

it was working fine a few weeks ago but now it wont read any sort of disc can some one please help me i have no idea what to do. even if i click on my computer the icon it won't show up(the disc drive icon on the my computer screen)
+ it is a disc drive built into the tower.

I BOUGHT A MOTHERBOARD GIGABYTE RANGE- 945PL-S3, I'M RUNNING A PENTIUM D 2.8 GHz 800 FSB CPU AND DUAL CHANNEL 1GIG OF RAM 667MHZ.
I START THE SYSTEM UP AND A GIGABYTE LOGO APPEARS ON THE SCREEN WITH OPTIONS TO ENTER SETUP etc AT THE BOTTOM BUT IT DOESNT SEEM TO GO INTO P.O.S.T. NONE OF THE OPTIONS WORK TO ENTER SETUP WHICH IS TO PUSH DEL. TO TAKE ME INTO BIOS SETUP. CAN ANY BODY TELL ME WHATS WRONG WITH THIS PC. OR ANY IDEAS. THANKS :)

I had to reformat my pc but my recovery disk only formats drive c so i used a different disk to be able to also clean my drive d. I reinserted my recovery disk and finished formatting. I removed the partition. I installed avg antivirus. Now my pc performs slower. I'm using an acer travelmate with centrino processor with 256 mb ddr2.

my computer was scanned by spywarebot and it turns out i have over 3000 spyware things and adware on my computer.
im only 15, i dont have a credit card or anything that can delete all of these things!
if i told my mom (who is sleeping because its past 11:30) she would get really mad because of this.
i need a FREE website that will delete all of these.
it says i needed to be registered to delete those, i cant.

is a mac for me? does mac have any of my main issues with my two year old windows xp laptop? they are:
slow
slow startup
slow opening of programs
rediculously low ram (348 mb)
it takes FOREVER to transfer my effing pictures onto it, and sometimes doesnt even recognize it.
xp is ugly (although i customized my desktop to somewhat look like a mac, with a dark touch, but still.
have to tie the damn chargin cable on with a rubber band to see if itl MAYBE feel like charging (im really interested in the macs magnetic thingy)
um, did i mention is ugly? and old.
really bad media handeling.

i just really want something fresh and new that just works when i want it to and thats fast and reliable and pretty.

and please dont recomend ubuntu. tried it. and it is the shitiest os. ide rather live with xp forever then deal with the hardness of ubuntu.

I am building a computer for basically internet use, no gaming. It is reasonably high end in components but not sure at what point getting a better video card is a waste. Since it is not for gaming would a cheap card work just as well as a high end graphics, 3D, gaming card? You know the old saying, it is only as fast as the slowest component. Don't want to waste money but don't want any bottle neck also. I have PCI Express slots and would use that for the video card.

I have tried using audio software like Goldwave and others but it is either bewilderingly complex, and hard to figure out for a non-audio-techie, or the voice-frequencies do not get totally eliminated.
