AVG free edition from grisoft.com is a great antivirus software. The basic is free and very, very effective. It only takes up 32.6 MB of hard disk space.
It now is very compatible with windows versions. I highly recommend it.
I do NOT recommend any of the following:
Norton - POS that does NOT like to be taken off your system
McAfee - AVG is better, and McAfee hates other anti-anything software that is not McAfee (wont run correctly if you use something else)
Anything you have to pay for. When it comes to anti-virus, the free stuff will do as much as the stuff you pay for.

I've used different Anti-virus software may it be PC-cillin(TrendMicro), AVG & Norton (Symantec). The first 2 is ok respectively, but since Im using different computers in my work. I found out that the most
efficient is the Norton Anti-virus. Because base on my experience, it so happened that when i was about to transfer some files from other PCs to my Laptop,(my PCs has TrendMicro and AVG)
I discovered that my flash drive has virus and was only detected by my Laptop (which by the way has Norton installed ).
Norton Internet Security program folder is 63 mb....
hope this helps...

Well I think AVG is quite cool for the security, it doesn't take much resources and hence doesn't slow down your computer, if you are against piracy then you can get the free version from avg.com, go to downloads n frm there you can find the free version(it doesn't have a firewall) n if you're a pirate or doesn't mind being one then you have thousands of ways getting the software with a keygen, you can download the Full Internet Security its just of 40 MB.

Hello [K]ay_bP,
I cannot say if it is the smallest anti-virus program but I have used the Grisoft AVG anti-virus program for years.
It has always picked up any virus that I have inadvertently downloaded and fixed them. It updates its protection daily and it is FREE!!
The actual size of it is 32.8mb.
If you want to try it, the download link is:
http://free.grisoft.com/
Grisoft also do other free programs like anti-spyware.

First and foremost, these are MY opinions and have experienced several machines that had these on them.
as well as users using these products. Not to mention that I have ran each and every one of these myself
so as to not confuse those that think that I have not.
My findings in these products: These products are useless and sometimes scare the normal user.
Also, these products are not for the normal user

If you're looking for a free AV...Go for Avast! Home, AVG free or Avira Antivir...All can be downloaded from download.com.
As for paid AV, I'd go for Kaspersky as a first choice or NOD32. Both are the most effective AVs on the market. Kaspersky has recently released it's 7th version. You can download a trial from their official website. http://www.kaspersky.com.

I don't know about the space but McAfee is basically the best. But it is kind of hard to get because it is not sold in stores regularly, it was made for businesses, talk to computer specialists.
oh and people think it is good but Nortin Anti-virus says that nothing is wrong, when something is. Trust me I had 2 hard drive crashes because of undetected viruses.
