For my new self-built pc, i am looking to use a Dual core CPU.

I'd like to know the difference in the few types around, as the price's are so much different.
I dont want to know about popularity of different ones, i want to know performance and speed of the different chips.

I have a firm budget for a CPU.

My possible buys are :
AMD AM2 Athlon 64 X2 4000+ (2.1Ghz , 512kb L2 lache)
INTEL PENTIUM D 2.8 GHz LGA 775 DUAL CORE

I dont think i can afford a core 2 duo, they seem to expensive for my build and i simply dont want to spend money on it, as its more money for the cheapest one, which has a small 1.86Ghz speed.

So whats different between an AMD X2, a Dual core pentium? And possibally a Intel?
I assume its got to be something to do with the Lache?
But what should i look for?

Thanks.

Pentium D 2.8Ghz is a lousy dual core. Get the NEW and cheap Core2 Duo, the new Pentium E 2140 or the E2160. They are great overclockers too. More here:

Check out the benchmarks and awesome performance when overclocked. The E2140/E2160 run very cool even when overclocked.

hi dual core is like one core and virtually dual processors and core 2 duo means it has two cores.each core can run a process at a time. so the core 2 duo is faster than a dual core.

your computer can give you good performance if you maintain properly. that is limiting the applications you use and limiting the auto run programes.

if you are going for amd that is a good processor but it generates little bit more heat than the intel. but if you are going for a pc for normal uses you can go for a dual core chip.

if you want more and more information about the procesors you can visit intel.com

It depends on how you obtain them.if you are buying seconds(used)items,it,s risky unless you know the seller and trust them.I would suggest you trot round the various dealers, asking them these questions as you go,who knows you may get a dealer or privateer who will offer you a good deal and sound advice.Everyone say,s their,s is best, there are many constructors about who will give you differing reasons for using either one, regarding your application.

You may want to try this site:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html
You can compare the processors you are thinking about.
Choose your first cpu choice then your second then try the various benchmarks related to your interests.
That way you can find the cpu that best suits your needs.
